Synopsis:
Kanda Rokuro is an assistant at the Jinguuji Miko Medium Detective Office. He works for Jinguji Miko, the owner and medium extraordinaire, doing odd jobs and helping her with cases. He may need to provide a little something extra though, for Miko’s power is derived from sexual energy, which could be supplied by him as long as he plays his cards right. Between phantom hunts, trips to the beach, a horny junior assistant and an evil doppelganger, Kanda has his work cut out for him. He’ll do whatever it takes to reach his goal of not only sleeping with Miko, but cultivating a long term relationship with her in the process.

Review:
Spanning two thirty minute episodes, Phantom Hunter Miko is a supernatural-comedy chockfull of sexual flavor. Focusing on Kanda and Miko, who both like each other but are too shy to tell, we are treated to your standard run of obstacles that get in their way. These include a second apprentice, Mao, who is madly in love with Kanda and Kanda’s evil doppelganger that is a culmination of his baser desires. The result is a fairly active first episode, but given its solid conclusion leaves the second episode with little to expand upon. This splits the second episode into two halves, starting out with Mao having arranged marriage problems, and everyone’s favorite, the beach trip.

Both episodes are mildly enjoyable, trying to keep things light-hearted most of the time and getting in some comedy bits to keep things from becoming too dull. Everyone basically falls into your standard archetypes. Kanda succeeds at being the horny lead that has some moral principles, but not enough to keep him from spying on Miko while she’s in the shower. Miko, on the other hand, is the strong and shy type, but due to her being a sexually charged medium is equally as horny. These characters are not very unique, nor do they have sufficient time to evolve into anything greater.

Phantom Hunter Miko is more of a hentai-light feature, with all areas below the waist shadowed, covered, or simply invisible, thus making this a rather tame release by comparison to most others. While some may not like this aspect, I found that leaving something to the imagination was a positive aspect and didn’t detract from the episodes at all. This also had the effect of greatly reducing any sort of looping of the same scene over and over, which made sex scenes much less tedious. However, what did detract from the sex scenes, even though the animation is above average with attractive character designs, is that the most important scene was done as a slide show. While this didn’t totally ruin the scene, it did cheapen it.

Since the naughty bits are always hidden, there really isn’t anything too objectionable. While Phantom Hunter Miko consists mostly of regular sex, it also includes a lesbian scene and a couple extraneous oddities. Such as one scene in which Kanda gets an electrode inserted into him and a scene involving a dog that has been possessed by a man’s psyche. The dog does have sex with a woman, which does technically constitute bestiality, so be aware. It really isn’t offensive however, as it only lasts for a few seconds, is done from a comedic position and doesn’t show anything. Probably the most disturbing thing is how they “show” initial penetration every so often, by using a fish charging into a huge fish vagina. Now that’s what I call odd.

Ultimately, Phantom Hunter Miko is just an enjoyable little romp, but isn’t really anything new or deep. With cookie cutter characters and no time for any real development, it just ends up as your average, though enjoyable, title.
