Synopsis:
Keisuke and Shizuka have been friends since childhood. Now Shizuka has grown into a beutiful young woman, and Keisuke's always dreaming of making love to her. What's strange is, Keisuke seems to end up having sex with one girl after another... with the exception of Shizuka. Will these two ever get together?

Review:
I had high hopes and expectations for New Angel, being another feature from my favorite hentai manga artist Ujin ("Sakura Diaries", "U-jin Brand"). I've had mixed reactions from friends who've seen this series -- some like it and some think it's just so-so. I guess I share a little of both sides' views... because I think it's good, but it's not something I'd call great.

Five episodes make up New Angel, and each one starts with Keisuke's fantasy scenarios with Shizuka. The first episode has Keisuke possessed by a pretty girl ghost, much to the horror of his classmates; the second ep has Keisuke help out a suicidal female schoolmate; the third ep has Keisuke caught between a stepmom-stepson feud; the fourth and fifth eps has Keisuke and Shizuka living under one roof for a week... and you know what that will eventually boil down to.

While New Angel has the usual boy-chases-girl kind of plot, it is marked by strangely humorous events and dialogues that set it apart from other boy-chases-girl fare. For example, in the second episode with the suicidal girl, Keisuke goes up to her and boldly asks, "Since you are about to die I guess you don't have to worry about birth control. Why don't we have sex first?". The girl in turn agrees, saying "I may as well devote the my last moments to helping out the less fortunate...". In the ep before that, a sex-starved female ghost practically corners and jumps Keisuke. While Keisuke's "lucky breaks" are rather original, the fact that Keisuke has sex with tons of girls and still manages to be the nice guy who gets the girl by the end of the day is not. I've seen that kind of hentai hero syndrome in titles like "End of Summer" and "Can Can Bunny". But then that's hentai for you... half the fun for the typical raging male hormone is the variety and the fantasy that yes, I can conquer every body!

The art and animation are just splendid, although the girls tend to resemble each other (they just have different hair). Sex is depicted very graphically, which is quite a departure from Ujin's usually mild and symbolism-laden approach. His other works don't show the lower genitalia and actual penetration, but this one does... a lot! Also, if you are familiar with Ujin's animated titles, you'll spot certain scenes in New Angel that are also in his other works. Take that panty-stretching scene in the third screenshot below. Sakura Diaries features a similar scene where Touma takes Urara's panty and checks it out. In the second ep with the suicidal girl, the skydiving scene is reminiscent of Visionary's third episode "Skydiving in Love".

New Angel is pretty much an above average hentai series with a fairly good mix of nice visuals, hot sex, and comical situations. It's not Ujin's best, but it's definitely his raunchiest.

Miscellanies:
New Angel pretty overpriced -- a mere five episodes is split into five separate tapes costing over $20 each. Someone release this on DVD please!
