Synopsis:
An alien has crash landed on the Earth under the guise of a meteorite and is preparing to wreck some havoc upon the world. Looking to populate the entire planet with its children, this tentacle beast is out to pollinate all the women he can find. All is not lost though, for not only does the Japanese government have a plan to defeat this monster, but an unknown woman has come to help save the Earth as well. Will they be able to stop this tentacle fiend from impregnating all the women on Earth with its seed?

Review:
Mission of Darkness is a tentacle hentai title with a sci-fi/comedy backdrop. Clocking in at just over 40 minutes in length, it wastes no time and gets pumping right from the get go. An alien, aka a tentacle demon thing, has come to Earth looking to impregnate every woman with its seed so it and all its children can take over the world. Once the basic premise is established, they delve right into a number of scenes in which the tentacles rape various women, resulting in their bodies exploding because of an overabundance of semen. The sex scenes actually don’t last very long, but there are a whole lot of them throughout the 40 minute time frame. While this does keep things moving, it doesn’t really give you the time to get attached to anyone that is getting violated and subsequently killed. With all these women being exploded, the Japanese government has taken notice and is working to find out what the heck is going on and how to stop it. I won’t spoil it for you, but they come up with quite the doozy of a way!

You can’t escape from the rather standard plotline in a hentai title; it’s almost a staple of the genre. While the sci-fi aspect it nice, it really doesn’t add too much, but the comedy does give it a certain flavor. Whether intentional or not, I found Mission of Darkness to be fairly funny, which really lifted the mood of what would have been an otherwise very serious and arguably much worse OAV.

The sex is very explicit, and most of the time very violent. Exploding girls, sometimes actually shown, really feels diametrically opposed to the lighthearted/comedy tone the rest of the release exudes. Other than that there are only a couple of scenes that feature humans having sex together, which offers regular sex and one scene with dual penetration.

The animation is sadly anything but impressive, with not only abundant looping and panning shots, but with character designs that aren’t particularly appealing. Everyone looks blocky, unevenly drawn, and with as little detail as they could get away with. I was astounded when I learned it was made in 1997, since I would have put money on it being made in the 80’s. I’m usually not a huge stickler about animation quality, but in terms of hentai titles, it’s one of the more important aspects of the release. Mission of Darkness really fails in this respect.

As with a number of hentai titles released back in the early 2000’s, the English dub has the female lead voiced by a porn star. I have yet to see a title where this move actually works, though to be fair, even when they don’t use a porn star I have yet to hear an English dubbed hentai worth hearing. Suffice to say, unless you are looking to cringe and/or laugh your way through Mission of Darkness, just watch it subbed. The Japanese track is fine and it’s just too awful to watch dubbed. The soundtrack is also uninspired, and serves adequately as unobtrusive background music and little else. On the subject of sound, they have the oddest noise for people having sex. I don’t even know how to describe it, but it sounds really strange.

Mission of Darkness ends up as an average hentai title, with unimpressive animation and character designs, but a fairly enjoyable story. It will surely be a bore for some, but others will find some enjoyment from the hilarious absurdity of it all, as I did.
