Reviewer: Aaron Murphy 2/25/2008 Synopsis: Review: Initially focusing on the exploits of Yoshijiru Saku and Aoi Mirai as they decide to exercise their own sense of rough justice on a number of bullies, things quickly take a turn for the sex. Yoshijiru’s calm, cool and badass self is apparently what every woman wants, and he’s more than willing to service their desire for a piece of him. Now, in-between these random sexual encounters spread across the first episode, the main conflict is established as well as Yoshijiru’s burgeoning relationship with Aoi. She assumes the role of the fiery female, who’s easily infuriated, but soft and caring on the inside. The perfect yin to his yang, if you will. This setup allows the second episode to go into full sex swing. And while Yoshijiru spends most of his time “enticing” female members of class 2-B to join his play, he still has time to build an actual relationship with Aoi, who he’s working on the content portion of the play with. This is one of the more positive aspects of the release, and is also the saddest victim of Maple Colors’ biggest pitfall; its complete lack of an ending. As a result, the story has absolutely no closure, the female lead never gets in on any of the action, and all major plot points are left unfinished. With only two episodes, this really kills the story portion of the release, leaving just the comedy, sex, and technical’s to hold the whole thing together. Not an easy and especially not a preferable feat for a show to have to try and pull off. The sex is very graphic, covering the full gambit of tame sex acts. The sex scenes are fairly well done, almost always with a new partner to vary things up, even if the same basic sex is reoccurring. An additional plus here is that the characters themselves are pretty cute, and coupled with some above average animation makes Maple Colors easy on the eyes. The English dub is sadly substandard however, while the Japanese language track should be fine for anyone, especially by comparison. Maple Colors winds up a hit-or-miss comedy with all the trappings of what could have been an above average hentai title. And even though the sex is enjoyable and the other technical aspects present to satisfying degrees, the story offered is greatly hindered by an inconclusive ending. This makes it good for little more than a single watch. Miscellanies: Screenshots:
