Alright, I don't really know where to put this. "Advent Children" is not Live Action, I don't consider it as Anime, and it's definitely not a game. Still, it seems to fit best into the Anime section, seems closest.

Uh, well, I saw this movie recently and I found it a bit disappointing.
It had undisputable technical qualities, but in the end it was nothing more than fan service - presenting all the dear characters from dear FFVII in animated motion. And that's about it. I have to admit I did not really get what the story was about - maybe someone can fill me in - but what I understood was that these angry young men who seem to have been genetically manipulated as part of the JENOVA project, wanted to, uh, reawaken JENOVA, whom they consider their mother, and reincarnate Sephiroth.
Yeah, Sephiroth makes his appearance, gets his ass whooped by Cloud without much ado and the world is saved once again. I have no idea what the bad guys needed all the kids for, and what was the purpose of this dragon thing that tore up Midgar's town square? And I cannot understand why the Turks have suddenly become the comic relief element, while at the same time refusing their only interesting (read: female) member to appear for my greater entertainment... and Tifa always wore that black jacket (or whatever it's called) instead of her trademark white'n'tight shirt...

Oh, okay, it was nice seeing everyone in motion and some fight scenes were kinda cool, but in general I wouldn't really recommend the movie... although it has a single real highlight - at least for seiyû fans like me:
The voice of Aeris is Sakamoto Maaya, great performer of the "Escaflowne" OST and voice of Kanzaki Hitomi of the same series.
I use to read staff lists at the end of animated pictures, and after a row of names that didn't tell me much I was surprised to find Maaya's name, since she doesn't do many voice jobs. Her name appeared in the Animage magazine in 1996 already, but her list of voice cast jobs still doesn't fill a sheet of paper after 11 years... I wonder why... she has an admirable voice.
Maybe I'll buy it if I find it for a fiver or so.

Ok, as for the story part, I myself did not fully understand it and it been months since I saw it. So hopefully some one can fill you in, but I think you have to have a good understanding of the game.

I would recommend this to a lot of people just because of the amazing graphics and the fight scenes. I only remember a small part of the plot but I pretty sure I enjoyed it. lol, I really do need to watch it again and really focus on the plot.

I think Maaya played Aeris in the Kingdom Hearts games, well in the Japanese version of course. As far as I know, she is trying to pursue an acting career, which could explain why she doesn't have too many voice cast roles. But then she does do voice overs for like Japanese dubbing of American movies and various video games, so if you add those I'm sure it'd fill up a page. I always considered her more of a singer than a voice actor anyway.....

I didn't really play much of FFVII(couldn't stand it), but watched the movie anyway since well.... ITS 3DCG and PRETTY! Fun action, didn't make any bloody sense and you kinda feel like you wasted a good chunk of your day.....

The fight scene near the end is well done I think.
Other than that, it's an alright movie.
Nothing spectacular, but not horrible either.

yeah Advent isn't that great of a movie. I admit that. I only watched it, because those are some mighty beautiful graphics. mean wow. The only fight scene I thought was good was the first and the last but still very good. Again everything else about it was average to below average. Still love those graphics, can't wait for programers to start cranking the 360 and PS3 to their max and giving us those kinda of graphics in out game play. They should be able yto since the old xbox was able to, check Panzer Dragoon Orta, those are beautiful cuts scenes when they put effort into it.

This thread almost seems like it belongs in the review thread.

Seems like most people watched it only because they like the graphics. If you want good graphics then I recommend The Spirits Within (better graphics IMO), which also has a good and understandable plot.

I didn't like Advent Children very much, it might just be because I have never played any FF games except for FF X-2 (which happens to really suck). I was unable to understand what was going on. And I didn't like how Sephiroth died in one attack, that was disappointing.

Ichigeki Hissatsu is a common anime cliche though. A long fight that ends with a super duper special move that owns in a single hit~

I played FFVII and I loved it, still the only thing the game gives to the CG movie is the characters, which of course means that the movie is only half the fun if you don't know the characters' personalities. If you don't know the characters and still watch "Advent Children" I guess the movie's a real sucker. Except for CG freaks. Which I am not.

Got any sources for that?

Hail to realism! If you throw yourself in combat gear and tour the global hotspots for ten years and manage to survive the ordeal, you'll be helluva great fighter and field survival specialist, but "The strongest man can be killed by a single arrow..." Sorry to disappoint you, but rising hit points are only existent in games. :D

On the other hand, Sephi was only incompletely summoned since some of JENOVA's, uh, ooze was already lost, and Cloud's attack was quite extraordinary.

I think I read that somewhere on some Maaya fansite a while back, but I can't really remember. One of the songs she did, 03+ was for some short movie thing she had an appearance in... I don't have much idea about the details....

I'm with 42317 unlike what most poeple think most fights do only last a couple of moves. It's actually rare for a fight to last more then 30 seconds. You do maybe five or less moves to gage an opponates reflexes and defense then go for the kill. As for weapons combat, it is said that if you are of any skill you will kill your oppenate in one or two moves. This is usually pretty accurate.

These huge long complex fight scenes in movies and video games just don't happen with skilled artial artists. Why, well when one kick from just a black belt as the same amount of power connecting with an oppenate as a car going 32 miles per hour. Or a punch having enough force to chatter a cocanut which requires a 3rd more power to break then a human skull, you understand why. You can only block and evade for so long, Martial Arts have been around for thousands of years and they do their job well, hurting people. So yes real fight do last only a few seconds, sorry dudes.

As someone who's never played FFVII, I actually understood the plot pretty well (since I've seen it three times). But I agree that the movie definitely doesn't stand on it's own very well. And for people other than guys like me who'll enjoy any movie as long as it has decent action sequence, or Final Fantasy fans, there probably isn't enough here to peak interest. Also I found the excessive use of fast-edits (a la Batman Begins) slightly annoying even if it did give the fights a little more visceral. Fast-editing in fight sequences just doesn't make sense in this case. In a movie like Batman Begins, fast-edits make sense because the director is trying to make the fight sequences more realistic. But in a movie like Advent Children, the fights are ridiculously stylized anyway and heavily fantasized and hence there is no real point in using fast edits to "improve realism."

Still I found it pretty enjoyable. Especially the 720p version that I managed to find.

As a side note, technically speaking, Spirits Within was still much more impressive than Advent Children. Even though the movie itself was mostly garbage, the visuals in that movie were definitely superior to Advent Children.

Please don't be upset. I didn't want to seriously oppose you in your argument that you didn't like the quick finishing move, I just wanted to give an opinion why it can be called a plausible solution for the end of the duel.
Maybe I failed in terms of rhetorics... choice of words. If so I'm sorry.
