Vinland Saga is like a pretty damn cool manga.

It's about vikings.

It's being done by Makoto Yukimura, you might remember him from Planetes. As you would expect from him, this manga is pretty historically accurate. It's quite dramatic/serious, but also light hearted at times.

Did I say it's about vikings?! That's like pirates, except better.

And it's not just about vikings, it's about vikings plundering England (and judging by the title, probably making their way to America at some point - Vinland = viking name for america)! It doesn't get much better than that.

And the art is great. Boy did Makoto improve sine Planetes! Much more dynamic.

The battles take up a lot of the manga, but it's alright, because of the art. I expect it to become heavier on story, as it moves on.

This far the story has taken place in Iceland, Denmark, Faroe Islands, a bit in France, and of course England.

I think it has reached about 4 volumes in Japan. It's a bit slow, but the art is worth it. It also seems that it will be turned into an anime before long.

Here is some art from the first chapter:

No need to say more, I'm reading that next!
Thanks for the recommendation there. The art reminds me a lot more Berserk than anything else though.

While it is not as detailed as Berserk's art (nothing can match Berserk when it comes to details), I actually like this more, because it seems more dynamic. It's like it's easier for my brain to fill in the blanks between the pictures.

Vinland Saga is genius! Have you read Berserk and wanted to read something similar, with a mature theme but perhaps a little more realistic!
I just read volume 4, can't help but to say I love it.
