A can of compressed air always works well.

The kind of "yuck" that I'm talking about needs to be scraped off with a blade. It's not just dust beneath the keys...
But removing the keys would indeed help (I could then scrub the keys one by one with a kitchen brush), so how can this be done without applying violence?

I downloaded a split avi file and the splits have endings from ".001" to ".005".
What program do I need to reunite the avi file?

Can you play an individual part? If you can't, then it's a split archive file containing a full avi file. You need to try extracting the first file.

I had this happen to me the other day and had to download the hjsplit program here http://www.hjsplit.org/ to recombined it. Usually when you have these compressed files that have been split to end with .001 and so on it was done with hjsplit and you just need to use the program to join them back together.

That's what I use to do first, but it asked me what program I'd like to use in order to open the file and it seems I don't (rather: seemed I didn't) have the right program.

Aha, now that sounds interesting... might have stumbled across the same phenomenon a couple of years back, now that you mention it... HJSplit's .exe file is even still on my computer... the things you find in the dusty backchambers of your hard drive.
Thanks for your efforts!

Try to open it with an archive extractor anyway. Just because it has a funky extension doesn't mean it doesn't open sometimes.

I already found a solution to my latest software problem, but I'd still like to write it down just if anybody runs into the same trouble.

A few days ago my ZoneAlarm firewall received an update. Which is fine, and ZoneAlarm always worked reliably, I've been using it for more than ten years now. Until the update it was just that - a firewall. But lately antivirus software and "application control" was included. Which is also nice because you get even more for the money that you don't have to spend on its freeware version, but a good deal of my programs just wouldn't run anymore.
Looking at the task manager I found that the respective program was "officially" running - at 0 % CPU utilization.
I started looking around. Aha, the new ZA antivirus software was causing friction with the Avira software I was using so far. As it seems antivirus softwares cannot coexist. So I uninstalled Avira. Things were getting better, but many applications would still in effect not work.
Solution: ZoneAlarm application control. All the programs that were not running had a question mark in their line, which actually means that I should be asked whether the application was trustworthy, I guess when the exe. file was activated. Didn't happen, no such question.
I switched off application control and suddenly everything was back to running smoothly.
