aka. Birdy the Mighty

Tsutomu is a highschooler working towards his university entrance exam, and there's nothing unusual about him. Until one night he gets caught up in a sort of intergalactic police chase - as he is about to be killed by an extraterrestrian criminal Birdy saves him by merging with him. She then lives inside him and emerges whenever things get tough (a sort of Henshin/transformation included). And Birdy is a tough one indeed. She's a member of a special police team tracking down dangerous criminals all over the known universe, gifted with superhuman stamina, speed, and strength.
The current case is an alien lady, Levy, in league with a human scientist from the prewar era who has managed to stay young due to his research and Levy's help. These two are trying to unleash psychokinetic powers among human beings, and in their experiments they show little compassion or ethics.

About ten years back I found a few artbook scans and screenshots from the four episodes Birdy the Mighty OVA (1996) and I was immediately in love with the character designs, done by Takahashi Kumiko, or rather with Birdy's design. The multitude of her facial expressions make her come alive in a way imho, and it's fun to watch her smirky mimic. Many character designers do not work as elaborately. In general the animation quality is on a high level (at least for 1996 standards).
Then again how could I resist Mitsuishi Kotono in a lead role? That's imposible, unless the Anime makes a very bad impression otherwise.
Nogami Yukana, aka. just Yukana nowadays, also has a role that sounds very different from, say, Pretty Cure's Yukishiro Honoka.

It's a good series. Not so amazing that it should be in anyone's collection, but a solid piece of entertainment, especially if one likes Mitsuishi Kotono's voice or the beforementioned character designs.
