Anime of the Month for September, 2009: Eve no Jikan

The first episode began on the 1st of August 2008 with the 6th and last episode coming out on September 14th 2009

Description
The future, probably Japan. Robots have long been put into practical use, and androids have just come into use.

Influenced by the Robot Ethics Committee, it's become common sense for people to treat androids like household appliances. Their appearance - indistinguishable from humans except for the ring over each android's head - has led some people to empathize unnecessarily with androids. Known as "android-holics", such people have become a social problem.

Rikuo, a high school student, has been taught from childhood that androids are not to be viewed as humans, and has always used them as convenient tools. One day Rikuo discovers some strange data in the behavior records of his family's household android, Sammy.

Rikuo and his friend Masaki trace Sammy's movements, only to discover a mysterious café that features a house rule that "humans and robots are to be treated the same"...

I finished watching this not too long ago and its pretty good.

An interesting take on the whole philosophy behind whether robots can become like humans and possess their own self awareness or sentience and all that schmuck. Characters are interesting and so are the various conversations. There seems to be an underlying plot that has yet to emerge itself fully, only being hinted at.... and it ends with a big THE END? so its probable that there might be a second season to elaborate upon all that. I do hope there is a second season.

I'm gonna watch this some day, definitely.
If AI advances to human levels androids must be considered human in legal terms.
But humans are not trustworthy in that sense so I'd rather advice academic circles as to net let AI evolve that far OR strictly limit androids' capabilities. If they're smart enough to realize they're being treated like something disposable they'll complain. And if at the same time they're superior in terms of physical functions we're gonna live in exciting times. It's a very interesting and controversial topic with different philosophies.

Recently, the whole anime had a theatrical release. All 6 episodes compiled into a movie along with extra scenes to glue it all together. It fits together rather well nice and pat, and the extra scenes help to flesh out some inner workings. And Sammy moe. Along with the slideshow in the ED which reveals quite a fair bit.

There is a better sense of complete-ness with the theatrical release. While it could stand by itself sufficiently well enough and leave the rest to our imagination, this is good enough that I desire a sequel. And something good could be done with whatever is left hanging around. Mysterious pasts, possible conspiracies...
