C'mon, there should be thread about them!

Quoting Wikipedia, since I couldn't have said it any better:

Gravure idols (グラビアアイドル, gurabia aidoru) are Japanese models who primarily pose in bikinis, leotards, and other provocative clothing for photo spreads in magazines and photobooks aimed largely at men. In recent years, some popular idols have released DVDs of their work, typically posing in revealing outfits. Fetish themes may include wrestling, martial arts, and Superheroines from tokusatsu.

Gravure idols range from as young as age 11 (Irie Saaya, in 2005) to as old as 31 (Hoshino Aki as of 2008). Gravure idols do not pose nude or perform sexually explicit acts in their work, though some simulate sex acts in their DVD releases.

The term is derived from
photogravure, or, technically more precise, rotogravure, the type of printing process used in the production of glossy magazines.

I wouldn't have gotten in contact with such videos if I had not seen the 2003/2004 SailorMoon television drama, when looking up the names of the actresses lead me to the topic.
If I'm not mistaken, all these girls' roots lie in being models. Today, Sawai Miyû and Kitagawa Keiko are pursuing more of an acting career, Azama "Mew" Miyû is still a fashion magazine model, and Hama Chisaki (= Izumi Rika) had, after finnishing SailorMoon, completely disappeared from all media (until this summer!). I'm not sure how Koike Rina will develop (she did one of these infamous Loli videos, "O-nii-chan to issho") since she is in the latest "Kamen Rider" season, but Komatsu Ayaka is definitely a gravure model.

Well, looking for the "Nitchoku" picture collection I found Ayaka's DVDs "Megami no Chu!" and "Moonlight Doll". I watched "Megami no Chu!" today and felt I should say something about it.

I felt my brain drip out of my ears.
You see, Ayaka is a pretty young woman with recognizable hips who knows how to present her upper 80 centimeters. She's a natural as a photo model - but the more movement is implied, the worse it gets. Apart from her looks, you could even say that she sings better than the average Japanese karaoke girl. But her acting and dancing skills are abysmal, like Pinocchio's. And in this movie she has to do some acting.

The concept of the movie is somewhat strange, but principally interesting.
She plays a girl who plays a game on her laptop with a USB gamepad. In the game she is to choose from an array of characters - also played by herself - in different costumes, and fight against enemies of sorts. You know, like in Virtua Fighter, or Tekken, or what have you. Every character she chooses has a sort of intro movie that has absolutely nothing to do with the genre of the game she is playing. There's a nurse, a waitress, a B-Girl (a female DJ, as it seems), a highschool girl, a girl in a China Dress, a girl in a Bikini, and a special outfit - a kangaroo costume. She watches all of these movies, but plays only with "strong" characters, after she failed with the nurse. She chooses the B-Girl, the China Dress, and the kangaroo. Once a stage is finished you get to see a bonus feature, showing a girl - also Ayaka - wearing, well, skimpy clothing like underwear or a bikini for five minutes, all the while lasciviously looking at the camera.
The girl in front of the laptop is really eager to see the bonus scenes, and I ask myself: "Why?"
I don't really understand women's aesthetic sense, but I doubt there are many women who would be fascinated by a bikini model who doesn't actually do anything but stand, sit or lie there, with that suggestive look in her eyes, unless they're somewhat interested in women.

After she finished the boss, the game announces a special final stage. The light in her room goes out and after a few nervous seconds she is being attacked by three ninjas from the game. The camera turns away from the center of the room to the window. A scream is heard and the laptop displays the message "GAME OVER".

The choreography is not convincing at all and her acting is as usual like a wooden doll's. If you're not really interested in bikini modelling you'll experience a 45 minute loss of valuable life time. The only relatively good feature of the DVD is the "Making of" bonus feature. It is eight minutes long, with three minutes being worth watching. These few minutes contain a few spoken comments, rehearsing some sword play, and how she loses her shoe while kicking an opponent.

Practicing the sword fight choreography reveals how Quentin Tarantino has influenced the Japanese - Ayaka is wearing a yellow Adidas jacket with black stripes. Although she wears simple grey sports pants it is obvious that Uma Thurman's outfit has left a significant footprint in the international media landscape when it comes to sword fights.

Last but not least, the comments that she utters behind the scenes confirm my opinion on her: I'm under the impression that she's a natural and nice girl - but quite an airhead. Well, not completely stupid or something, but, well, you know what I mean.

I'm going to watch "Moonlight Doll" in 20 hours or so. I'll comment on that, too, if it's worth a few lines.

One of my old co-workers was obsessed with these videos and wanted to import and localize them for the US. Tokyopop tried it but it didn't do very well. I'm guessing that the market for this product is pretty much already saturated with Girls Gone Wild, porn and music videos (for those not old enought to buy the others)... I don't know how the Japanese market supports so many.

And yet, you finished it. You must be a masochist! :)

It is funny how the artistic influences ping-pong back and forth across the Pacific (of course, I'm particularly biased on this topic :P), but it is sad how sometimes it creates a mutant beast that should probably just be put down...

As for the airhead qualities of the actress, the odds are pretty good she's an airhead. People who are pretty and smart have other opportunities which reduces their presence in the statistical pool, eh? I'm just sayin'.

PS- My condolences regarding your anime club. That sounds like quite the hassle.

I've been busy with things academic and very trivial, whereas the first triggered the latter, because I need big relaxation after boring or frustrating work. If you try to find out biographical things about a Japanese physician who's famous but still alive you'll get frustrated, so in my free time I searched the web for pictures.

Most strikingly I stumbled across a newer picture collection of Koike Rina, whom I've already mentioned above. The little girl who played Sailor Luna in the SailorMoon live action show

Just two little pics I'd like to show from one of the more "daring" gravure idols, Nakamura Miu.
(These pics are 1200x1800 btw.)

This is the "less decent stuff" I was talking about in the Seirei Shôjotai thread.
The analogies to sexual acts are obvious, but still you don't get to see any intimate details.
Nakamura Miu is a legal adult, being 18 years of age since March last year. I would in fact be somewhat surprised if she didn't turn to hardcore stuff within the following three years - unless her pusuits of other fields of work turn out more successful than I can imagine. Apart from posing in front of cameras (be it stills or moving pictures) she has also sung and done a Seiyû role in Moyashimon, a minor part named Yogurti in episodes 9 and 11.

So much talk about these beauties, i'm suprised no one's put at least one video up yet. Anyway, allow me to pop that cherry if you please (no pun intended).

One of my ultimate favorite gravure idols is this girl named Ayumi Kinoshita, whom if not for hearing about and watching her in her role as Jasmine/DekaYellow in Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, i probably would've never heard of her in the first place. But i did see the show, and boy am i glad i did since she's got very good looks.

Despite this being primarily a workout vid, there's a very nice section near the end where she gets to hang out by the pool and pose in a kawaii swimsuit. :nose: Enjoy!

Kinoshita Ayumi? Must be an actress first of all, and not a gravure model, otherwise I would've heard of her (or at least seen a picture of her). Anyways, this is still a fine example of a gravure video, even if this film makes a rather futile but still an attempt to make you believe it was all about physical training, while it's really about seeing a good-looking woman (she'll be 28 this year!) in motion, from different angles, and that's it.
Thanks for the contribution.

You're welcome. :D

I saw this one of Mami Yamasaki a little after seeing the first one, and this one definitely gets down to it, strictly her posing in and around the pool in her pink swimsuit. :d^_^b: Doesn't get any more simple and kawaii than that. :booyah:

Thanks for the contribution again.
I find it hard to decide upon what to post right here because I perceive most Gravure videos as rather boring. I seem to be more of a photograph fan.

Today I cannot tell how the title "Moonlight Doll" in the initial post came to be. Komatsu Ayaka has made a photo collection called "Moon Doll", and the movie I am going to talk about is credited everywhere as "Sho wo sute, Mizugi ni narou!", another palm-to-the-head title that can be translated "Throw away your book and change into your swimsuit!"
And I didn't think that watching the 41 minute movie would have to wait for almost 24 months instead of just 20 hours.

Anyways, Ayaka plays a young author who has published her first novel when she was in highschool, but since then she hasn't had any ideas. Of course writers wear glasses, no doubt about it, but the way she handles them tells me she's never once in her life needed glasses. Those of you who do need glasses, let me ask you a question: If it slips down your nose what do you do to put it back where it belongs? Well, I use my index finger to shove it back, pushing right in the middle section where it touches the nose. In Japan, however, there seems to be a notion that you correct their position by shoving at the side by pushing up one of the temple arms - which I say is nonsense. But they do it all over the Japanese media. Only cool male characters push by the bridge of the nose, and usually only sunglasses.

So she wanders around in her spacious house, takes a nap, and then finds a picture from her highschool days, upon which she remembers the carefreeness of the time - a good excuse to show her in a sailorsuit scene. She remembers running down a dusty road, reaching the beach, and, you guessed it, stripping down to her white bikini, and then playing in the sea.
Or she plays ping-pong with a crew member - hello Mr. panty-flash!
Weak camera-handling there... too much zoom at one time, then again you have her face slightly blurred while the back wall of the room is perfectly focussed...
She wins the match and celebrates it by solemnly lying down on the table.

Gym dress, that is Bulma, scenes must be in there, too. No way around those.
Why is she playing a flute in that dress? Who knows... but I'm wondering whether anyone tells these models what flute scenes are actually standing for?
What follows are more swimsuits and a good deal of skin and more elevator music.

Thirty minutes later you begin to ask yourself "What happened to the author frame narrative? Well, just then the narrator tells us that she seems to have forgotten something important - and goes to the bathroom to take a shower. :P2:
Back to the beach she remembers the dreams she used to have as a schoolgirl, the usual stuff from the Seishun genre.

Eventually her old self and her new self meet somewhere in the middle and she takes a new look upon life, like "remember the good things and forget the bad things and strive to be happy". I guess this is the attitude that light novels come from. It doesn't really help you think about the real world around you, but that's a whole different discussion.

Whereas "Megami no Chû" had entertaining aspects that went beyond "a girl and her skin in different costumes" this is just the usual "sailor suit, swimsuit, gym dress" collection that aspires to be a movie but is not. The story including all the pseudo-philosophical monologues which we have already heard several times in other media products concerning themselves with youth will fit on half a sheet of paper.

Now, this movie also offers an "O-make" section - is it any good?
Well, Ayaka gives a few comments. The shooting took place on Guam, her second time being there, like every Japanese tourist she praises the local food, and then we see a few scenes showing how it was done... I thought it was funny when he struggled to get out the school uniform at the beach.
Aha, and there's a solution: The o-Make also contains off-shot scenes from Australia where the "Moon Doll" picture collection was done. Maybe that's why the uploader named the whole thing "Moon Doll" - probably the only thing he could read.

... and again the o-Make was more interesting than the original picture.

In my opinion Ayaka will look good whatever she wears, but I'll choose picture collections over such nonsensical videos anytime.

True... any woman of 5'5" should at least have 100 pounds.
And I'd like to mention that she's exactly four months older than I am. :D
