Nothing beats a sub than a well done dub.

Who are your favorite NA voice-actors?

Here's my first:

Kirk Thornton

Roles:

too numerous to list here (it'll occupy a whole page), so here's a link

For all his roles, I've only seen, or rather heard, his performance as Jade Curtiss, in the game, Tales of the Abyss. I don't understand Nihongo, but I swear that Kirk Thornton delivered a performance surpassing the Japanese seiyu.

Jade's the guy in blue with long hair.

PS. There was no collective forum for stuff related to anime and games, so even if this is in the Anime forum, feel free to list game VAs (like I have).

Mine is someone who voiced Kira Yamato in English version of Gundam Seed.At least he sounds less annoying when he crying than Kira's Japanese seiyuu.

I like Mel Blanc, Allen Reed, Jean Vanderpyl and Charlie Adler.
Then there's Jessica Calvello...
Tiffany Grant...
Allison Keith...
Catherine Cavadini...
Tara Strong...
E.G. Dailey...
Nancy Cartwright...
Kat Cressida...
Christine Cavanaugh...
Jeff Bennett...

Those are the ones I remember... there's a few more I think...

Still... I prefer the original voices. :D

Haven't watched a dub for a long time but a couple of actors stick out in my mind:

Beau Billingslea
Steven J Blum

Let's not waste this thread by degrading it into a simple list. As said in Animetric's forum rules and guidelines:

Quote:
16) (Added 3/16/2007) - No straight listing. Aka do not just list your five favorite anime titles without saying something about each. Include such things as why is it in your top 5, what its about, who your favorite character is, the genres the title covers, etc. It is hard to start a discussion when you just have a handful of titles that you know nothing about to respond to.

At least tell the roles he/she played in and tell why you like them.

Of course you're right. I was quite in a hurry yesterday, so I didn't think of that.

Let's see...

Mel Blanc is the original voice of Barney Rubble and Bugs Bunny,
Allen Reed is Fred Flintstone,
Jean Vanderpyl is Wilma and Pebbles Flintstone,
Charlie Adler did the voice of Cow and Chicken, Baboon and The Red Guy (in Cow & Chicken),
Jessica Calvello did Excel (Excel Saga), which was a horrible tour de force but dedicated, so I like it for being a pain in my ear,
Tiffany Grant is Asuka (Evangelion) and regularly throws herself into respective outfits (looks hilarious),
Allison Keith is the voice of Misato from Evangelion, a nice dry and slightly hoarse voice,
Catherine Cavadini is Blossom of the Powerpuff Girls,
Tara Strong did Barbara Giordon and Vicky Vale (Batman), Princess Clara and Toot Braunstein (Drawn Together) and Bubbles (Powerpuff Girls),
E.G. Dailey is Buttercup (Powerpuff Girls)
Nancy Cartwright is the voice of Bart Simpson,
Kat Cressida did Deedee (Dexter's Lab),
Christine Cavanaugh did Dexter in the same show,
Jeff Bennet is the voice of Johnny Bravo.
And I forgot, for his strange name:
Dan Castellaneta! He did Homer Simpson and Megavolt (Darkwing Duck).

I don't like second language dubs very much, so I rather watch American animated series in English and Japanese Anime in Japanese, but still I name a few people who did Anime voices, because I found the performance remarkable for some reason, or it's just that I like the voice, no matter what the text.

LOL, spoil sport . . . :P

Very well, in accordance to the rules, I will hence list the reasons why I listed those two voice actors:

1. Bill Billingslea: I listed mainly because of his rendition of Jet Black on Cowboy Bebop. Everything about that role just worked. The voice, the tone, everything just seemed to fit the character, at some points even better than the Japanese voice actors.
2. Steven J Blum: a lot of good roles but again my favorite was his role as Spike on Cowboy Bebop. Spike is, for lack of a better word, a cool character. And Blum's voice just reeks of cool. It's laid back, and never tries too hard. Too many NA voice actors just seem like they're trying too hard and Blum is smart enough not to fall into that trap.

The only person I can think of in this context is Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. I mentioned liking her stuff on the Silent Hill 3 OST in in the favorite soundtracks thread there. She also does the voice of Motoko in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Kurenai in Naruto.

off the top of my head:

Scott McNeil (cool guy)

Janyse Jaud (simply the best)
Wendee Lee (she does directing work too)
Mary Elizabeth McGlynn

...so many more (I might add later)

I dunno. You're the only one I've come across. Nothing wrong with it though.

Dark One,

Usually people will watch subs some of the time and dubs some of the time. Just depends on how they like each one for each respective release. However, a lot of people in the fandom do only watch subtitled anime, you are not alone in that respect. Though, some of them only watch fansubbed anime since they have something against the "industry." Thus, they don't watch dubs at all so all they see are subs. I digress... yes many people out there, regardless of their reasons, do just watch subtitles.

I personally think you should at least try both if you have the option and listen to whichever one you like more. I usually listen to the dub first, and if I don't like it I will switch to subs. As a dub fan though, this doesn't happen that often 8)

You can't let a couple spoil you for the whole batch. I've heard a number of Japanese dubs I haven't been fond of, that doesn't stop me from listening to them every now and again.

Oh well, it's all personal preference. I know a lot of people that don't like dubs, I just don't understand it. Maybe I am just not picky :) .
