I just finished my final project for my programming 11 class. We were tasked with just making a website or visual basic program. I decided to make a website based around metal. I could've made it flashier, but we weren't given that much time. My friend did the intro and genre write-ups, I did all the programming and design. Now when it comes time to make a website for my game, I will be ready.

EDIT: I took down my old site and made a game review site.

Hey, that's a cool website! Is it gonna stay or will you put it down after evaluation?

It's about Metal.
Why make it "flashy"?

Hm... is there a different way to make the sample music available, other than the Apple QuickTime plug-in? I'm having difficulties with that.

I'll just leave it there for now.

Flashy, as in better looking. I'm using the default font, I'm barely using any bitmap images, etc.

Actually the sample music is the same on every page. It's a random Final Fantasy midi file I was using to test the embed function, and it uses whatever your default web player is.

Looks good. Flashy is not always better...I enjoy websites that have the simple look to them.

Oh... I see...

Well, not in my case. It wants me to install the Apple Quick Time plug-in.

I've started working on a real project, meaning something that doesn't have a deadline. Consider this a preview: http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/7233/newsite.png

It's going to be a game review site. I'm a lot more happy about the look this time around.

Is this going to go along with your previous thoughts on doing video reviews or are you going to do written reviews? Or both?

And what happened with the shooter you were making, did you put that on the back burner for now?

Written reviews. I found that doing video reviews is just more of a pain in the ass than it's worth.

Yes. Whenever I start working on something meant specifically for my free time, I won't stop until it's finished. Web design is more immediately beneficial for me. I can finish in under a month, opens the opportunity for freelance jobs, and in the case of the website I'm making now, be something that encourages me to play games instead of constantly code one. I will continue working on my game eventually, but I just need something different for now.

What's the meaning behind "Chain Reunion" and why is there a person called "Anus"?
Wouldn't "Angus" have done? :P2:

Code:
<td class='nav' onclick=window.location.href='index.php' height='27'>

That's some :wtf: code.

All tables, css only for color...

Thanks for that elaborate explanation. Now what's wrong with tables?

There is nothing wrong with tables. Most people just prefer to design using CSS. For your site, tables are fine...but for professional sites, I would recommend CSS.

Moving from tables to a css based layout makes it possible to create multiple looks without ever touching the actual layout. Just write multiple stylesheets. www.csszengarden.com is a perfect example for this. And in most cases makes the pages smaller in size. 50 big pages is slower to download than 50 smaller pages and 1 cached stylesheet.

What was though the :wtf: for me, was the lack of <a>. Using <td> and the onclick event handler is one bizarre way to create links.

I'll check that out before I start my next project, but for now I'll stay with tables.

The point is to make the entire cell a link. I recall trying <a> around the cell and it didn't work.
