This thread is a place for the members of the forum who're interested in participating to come together and watch a specific series at the same time each month and discuss it with one another. The focus will either be on a series just starting to be released or on a series that has been partly released but is still in the process of coming out. After the month is over all posts on the title, aka all posts after this one, will be transferred to their own thread for that title, a link to that thread will be placed here and a new title will then be chosen.

Anime of the Month

April 2009 - Valkyria Chronicles

May 2009 - Eden of the East

September 2009 - Eve no Jikan

Yesterday I was thinking that, since the "Anime of the Month" initiative failed, maybe we could have an "Anime of the Semester" project (or whatever you call half a year). That way nobody would be pushed onto the next series after only four episodes or so, and everyone could watch the whole thing episode for episode and discuss the them (presuming we're talking about 26 ep. series).
I think that's okay as long as at least two people maintain enough interest as to discuss the episodes they watched.

I think its called season. Each season is typically around 13 weeks or so. Currently we're kinda around mid season.

That sounds odd, because 13 weeks would only be 13 episodes. It is of course a seasone because Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall have about 13 weeks each (if your living in a place between about 45° to 50° north or south of the Equator I guess).

A TV season used to be 26 episodes (one per week for 26 weeks). To cut down the risk of a potential bomb, many different shows have been greenlight for a half season of 13 episodes (sometimes only 12). If the shows become popular, of course they make more episodes if they can. I don't know why it is called a season though...

In German we call this a "Staffel" (fem.).
In English there is at least the explanation that "season" refers to a period of time during which the show might be finished. I dunno much about the history of television series, but I guess it's related.

What is obvious is the fact that Japanese TV dramas often have 12 or 13 episodes, and that is because as a Japanese you have a very strong understanding of a season's (spring, summer, fall, winter) connotations. Many commercials also involve seasonal elements. So, in order to subtly convey a kind of basic atmosphere, the writers can opt for the length of exactly one season.

"Staffel" on the other hand... synonyms in English would be
"squadron" (a military aviation formation),
"scale" (e.g. "Staffelung" is a sort of measurement and categorization), or
"relay" (the team race of track and field).

But another synonym would be "echelon".
It might just be that this is the solution as an echelon is a line of distinct objects or subjects that are linked in some way. Be it soldiers of a unit - or different episodes of a certain series.
Make sense?

a season is the perfect word. a season is just a period of time during the year when something is available. ie, hunting season (the time to kill), cherry season (time to pick), tv sitcom season (you get the point)
perhaps you might have heard, "mangoes are in season now" or "I usually go on vacation during the off season (no tourists)"

though if the series goes on all through the year without end, it should not be called a "season" but a "year" since there is no "off season".

Maybe we should just agree on the fact that the subtle workings of language are way more flexible than our minds. :booyah:

But a particular anime is only available for how long it is. In a sense you can still use season. We have Star Driver season and Bakuman season and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt season.

That said, if we are going to have one this month, I nominate Panty & Stocking just for how whack and out of the norm it is.

I think the idea of anime of the season would be ideal. A whole series in a month can be a little time consuming.

And outright impossible if the Anime is just running and you get only a single episode per week.
The story hasn't really started yet, wham!, month over, next Anime of the Month? Impossible.
If there are already, like, 26 episodes to watch and if it interests me enough I can do the series in one or two sittings. :D
Anime of the Month should indeed be something that's already available in full imho. That way finished opinions can be exchanged.
