Features:
-1920x1200 native resolution
-Adjustable resolution down to 800x600 in ratios 4:3, 5:4, and 16:10. Vsync and fullscreen options.
-"FPS correction" option, which when selected increases the speed of everything when the framerate drops.
-Music, sound options and volume sliders.
-Options now adjustable from the pause menu.
-Support for, and customizable controls for, both the keyboard and gamepads.
-A mouse control option, with adjustable sensitivity.
-2 player local cooperative play, with the option for the second player to drop in during gameplay
-Multiple difficulties. In hard mode, you start with only one life and take double damage.
-Smooth framerate

-Two different modes
*Story mode has an rpg-like system where you gain experience and skill points to spend on new weapons and abilities. This will also have an unfolding story.
*Arcade mode cuts out the rpg gimmick and cuts out the story, for a pure arcade experience. This also has a statistics system that shows the players their shots, hits, kills, and accuracy at the end of a level.

Here's a gameplay video showing off some of the weapons, abilities, and enemies.

Thanks for the video. Looks like a concept we've had again and again... R-Type, Gradius, Nemesis, TwinBee, Apydia, SilkWorm, you name it.
But I have never seen such a shooter with RPG elements, and that is what sounds really interesting.

I gotta give you props Mmsven, it's quite impressive that you put the game together. It is sort of very reminiscent of the older games from way back when, or those free-to-play arcade games that are all over the place nowadays.

If you can't sell the game individually to consumers, I would recommend contacting the arcade sites and offering to sell them the game for some amount of $. At least that way, as a fall back, you can get something for the time invested in it.

And as 42317 said, at least if you introduce some new elements into the game it will give it a fresher feel.

I've made the video private to avoid anonymous people viewing it. I still think it is in a very unfinished state.

It seems you can still view it regardless when embedded. Is it working for anyone?

I've played more than enough free games to know that most of them are mediocre. There are still some commercial shooters being released, such as R-Type Dimensions, Ikaruga 360, and Gradius Rebirth. I'm trying to achieve commercial quality.

I've been planning to sell this game for only $10, anyway.

Well it looks like commercial quality to me and $10 is super reasonable.
Do you have a figure in your head about how many you'd like to sell?

Nope, when I click play it says the video is private.

How much more do you think you have to go before you hit "commercial quality?" And how long are you going to shoot for the game to be, play time wise?

As many as possible? Hopefully over 5 every 2 weeks. I don't know how well independent games sell.

It'll be commercial quality when it's finished, but for now I have all of the necessary presentation things such as customizable controls and gamepad support.

I'm aiming for around 4 hours of pure gameplay, but it'll realistically be 6-8 hours since this game is going to be very hard, like other games in the genre.

Isn't receiving feedback and comments the very purpose of a YouTube publication or preview?
If someone sends you BS just delete the comment...

The video is completely worthless to people who don't know who I am. I'd rather not waste their time.

I've spent the last week optimizing and revising my engine. I've shaved off a clear 60kb of code so far. Some of my early code was garbage. I'm going to have a new video soon, and I'm going to try and show off some more features and probably explain them.

I think I've also come up with a great idea for a game mechanic to keep my game from being generic. I'll give more info once I test it out.

The future of my game is looking as bright as ever :D

Sorry to bother you with questions, but what does "generic" mean in this context?
I can only think of "generic names" and "generic drugs" right now.

Generic in this context would be something akin to: similar to the rest, offering nothing new or different. In essence, he's saying he has found a way to make his game fundamentally different from all the other shooters out there. Sort of like the RPG elements would make his game less generic since it would offer something new that the others, for the most part, don't have.

I'm interested in seeing the new game mechanic you've come up with Mmsven!
