Preface:

Back during the BRS days, I had a habit of making a thread to review and rate the girls from the last bishoujo game which I'd just played. It's not a real review; merely a post that sums up my thoughts and opinions on the ladies I encountered. 8) Now that the boards are back up, I'm going to continue my personal tradition. Thoughts and opinions from others who have played the game are absolutely welcome!

For obvious reasons, this thread will contain spoilers, although I've hidden the major ones.

[hr]
Brave Soul:

Just a few notes on the game itself before I begin. Brave Soul was the first hentai bishoujo RPG that I'd played, and despite having dated-looking graphics and tinny Midi music, I had a real blast playing the game. I've been a long-time RPG fan, and seeing Brave Soul done in the style of the classic top-down Japanese RPG sure brought back the nostalgia. Despite being a H-game, Brave Soul makes you WORK for your libido; getting some of the girl's endings is extremely complex and I had to resort to a walkthrough for several of them. Don't let that discourage you, though. The rewards are well worth the effort.

If I had one complaint about the game, it would be that I wish the girls interacted more with each other. As it is, the girls pretty much only talk to you and no one else. It feels sometimes that you're leading around a party whose members can't see anyone else but you.

That said, Brave Soul was still one of the most fun bishoujo games I've ever played. I'm gonna start a petition for Crowd to make Brave Soul 2 next!

Alicia:

Image

Alicia was the first lady I went for (after playing through the game first and getting the no-girl ending). She's kind-hearted, generous and basically falls right into the Japanese RPG stereotype of the 'beautiful but passive white mage who only casts healing spells'. Well, she DOES have some offensive magic, but it's pitiful compared to what the others (like Caroll) can do. She's good at what she does though, and some of the later game dungeons are nearly impossible without her on your side.

I actually think her romance plot is one of the more believable ones. She has more events than any other character, and it gives you a good chance to see her character grow and develop over time. Your first date with her is one of the most humorous events in the game, and the event where she and your character declare your love for each other is particularly moving. A pity her ending is kind of disappointing.

Spoiler
I always feel kinda bad for Alicia if I go for Clare's ending. Knowing that she loves your character but is willing to step aside for her sister... :? It's just the kind of sacrifice that she would make willingly. That's what her character is like.

Overall, she was my second favorite lady out of the bunch. 2/6.

Caroll:

Image

Caroll is the opposite of Alicia, both in terms of character and abilities. She's a black mage with a wide range of offensive magic, specialising primarily in fire and ice magic (but with a REAL love for fire). She also has a number of utility spells which hamper enemies and boost allies (although I've NEVER seen her use her Haste spell...)

Caroll's quite a contradictory character. She's proud, hot-temepered and she has absolutely no qualms about letting you know what she REALLY thinks. She also loves to win, and she's willing to lie and cheat to get her way. This made it quite hard for me to empathise with her. Fortunately, her events are some of the most interesting and exciting, and as you progress through her story, you start to understand why she has such a harsh, abrasive attitude.
Spoiler
The reason for which, basically, is because she's really just a scared little girl inside who puts on a brave front in order not to look weak.

She's also the cutest-looking of the characters, in my opinion. ^_^

Her ending, unfortunately, is quite a big let-down.
Spoiler
I really don't approve of the way Rudy made use of her weakness to get his way in the ending. Couples should never do that to each other, in my opinion. It makes me almost certain that their relationship will end in break-up at some point.
Overall, she's my third favorite character in the game. 3/6.

Marin:

Image

Of all the ladies in this game, Marin was the one that I found the hardest to view in a sexual manner. Brave Soul's resident cat-girl is chirpy, energetic and has an endearingly naive view of the world. However, this same naivety makes me feel that she's still a child (and for all I know, she MIGHT be! I have no idea how old she is, or how quickly members of the Elder Race age), and I'm not a big lolita fan. :P

Marin's an odd character, ability-wise. She fights with spears, but she can also summon a number of elemental spirits to aid her in battle. There seems to be no limit to the number of spirits she can summon, provided she has magic remaining, which results in some CROWDED battlefields at times. Her agility is super-high, which lets her keep out of danger for the most part, but if she starts taking punishment, she goes down fast. I think she's died the most out of all the party members...

Marin's events are also an odd mix of silly and serious, and like her character, are often taken to extremes. Her serious events are SERIOUS, and her silly events are downright hilarious. (I still get a chuckle out of one event where Rudy contracts a mysterious 'illness'.) It's unfortunate that Marin's personality makes it hard to know what she's thinking. There are certain plotlines in her story that I feel could have been developed further
Spoiler
(the event with Darcia, in case anybody was wondering)
but they were just left hanging. Marin also has probably the WORST ending out of the lot.
Spoiler
Maybe being stranded on a desert island with a cat-girl is paradise to some people, but that doesn't change the fact that you're STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND!

Marin wasn't a favorite character of mine, but she escaped the "Least Favorite" award. That one goes to another lady... Marin's theme sure is catchy, though! 5/6.

Ruby:

Image

The curvaceous Ruby is another multi-faceted character. She's a Robin Hood-esque thief who steals from the rich and gives to the poor, but she also keeps a decent portion of the stash for herself. She's much more worldly and experienced than the other girls
Spoiler
(plus, she's the only one out of the group who isn't a virgin)
, probably due to the dangerous lifestyle that she leads. I get the distinct impression that Crowd was trying to make Ruby a femme fatale type of character, but it unfortunately falls through; Ruby just isn't ruthless enough to pull the role off. (Although that makes me like her more. ^_^)

Ruby's abilities are a strange mish-mash. She fights with throwing daggers, which keeps her at a safe distance from enemies, and can teleport herself to safety if she gets surrounded (which is good, because she's even more squishy than Alicia, for some bizarre reason). She also has a number of summon spells that conjure powerful golems to aid her, as well as a few utility spells. As a thief, she also proves invaluable in any dungeons with traps.

Other than Alicia, Ruby's storyline is probably the most comprehensive and involved of the 6 ladies. She has quite a complex backstory and there are some very interesting dilemmas that crop up as part of her storyline. Unfortunately, most of her events revolve around thieving, and I'm too much of a law-abiding citizen (I always play Lawful characters in D&D games, for example) to really stomach that for long. On the plus side, her ending is actually satisfying!

Overall, Ruby is quite an interesting character to pursue, and an interesting one to have in your party in general. 4/6.

(But her Silver Golem looks REALLY stupid. The first time I saw it, I went "W.T.F?!")

Image

Karen:

Image

Karen's one of the semi-secret characters in Brave Soul. (I say 'semi-secret' because she's mentioned right in the fricken' manual!) She's actually the princess of Minstrel, having run away from a priviledged, secure life in the hopes of learning about the world and seeing things with her own eyes. Having lived such a sheltered life, she's incredibly naive about the ways of the world. However, where this naivety made Marin seem cute, on Karen, it just makes her seem dumb. :? The fact that she has a terrible memory doesn't help her.

Karen's the typical "Luck Character" in Japanese RPGs. She actually has fairly good stats, but her Luck stat in particular is through the roof. She has a magic gun which can deal some decent damage with the right upgrades, but her primary ability is tossing a collection of bizarre objects at enemies, each of which has a special effect. The mushrooms, for instance, Slow enemies, while the bottles of poison either deal 1 damage, or 9999(!) damage. That's about all she can do, however, so her use to the party is really quite limited.

Unfortunately, Karen's events are some of the most boring in the game. They don't really do a lot to help improve my attitude towards her, with one exception.
Spoiler
The event where you crash her arranged wedding and escape with her is one of the most exciting ones in Brave Soul. Were I to recommend Karen's plotline to anyone, it would be solely to view that one event.
Her ending is also quite a big letdown, although that's probably due to my personal character again.
Spoiler
I've always been a strong advocate of duty and responsibility, and for Rudy to encourage Karen to run away from her duties as Queen, not to mention his own duties as King, is the height of irresponsibility.

With all these in mind, I hereby bestow upon Karen the undesirable title of "Least Favorite" girl in Brave Soul. (Hehe, guess her luck finally ran out. Better luck next time, princess.) 6/6.

Because this final character is a secret one, I'll post her entire section in spoilers.

Spoiler
Clare:

Image

Ahhh, the lovely Moon Goddess. I have to admit, when I first found out that Shell/Clare was the Moon Goddess, I was totally blown away. It was entirely unexpected, and one of the better twists in any game I've played.

Clare is quite unlike her sister, Alicia. She's calm, reticent and coolly professional, but it's quite easy to see the strength of her love for Rudy in her events. Of all the characters in the game, she's the only one who starts off the game in love with you, and everything that she does is to try and keep you safe. It's hard to turn down a woman to whom you mean everything. (Not to mention that you already spent 10 years looking for her, ever since you were a child.)

Clare is something of a warrior/priestess. She's deadly with a rapier, but she can also throw out a variety of lightning-based spells. She's not quite on par with Caroll in terms of pure damage, but she makes an excellent partner for Rudy in battle. She's nowhere near as tough as Rudy is, however, so you might want to have her stay back when facing tough enemies like ogres and giants.

My biggest complaint about Clare's events is that there's too few of them! While she starts the game already in love with you, I wish there were more events to allow you to see that love make itself apparent. Her ending is also the best out of all the ladies; a truly satisfying ending that also involves the other ladies! I'm pretty sure that if Crowd were to make Brave Soul 2, Clare's ending would be the canon one.

Clare, you get the honor of being my "Most Favorite" lady from Brave Soul. :D 1/6.

There's no pleasing the audience. :P

Looks like I can still edit my original post, so I'll see about adding in some pictures when I get back from work tonight.

EDIT: Well, I've got some pictures, but since this site doesn't allow direct uploading of images... Anybody got some storage space I can borrow? :D

OK, I finally managed to upload some pictures up on Imageshack. I deliberately picked ones which aren't explicitly adult, so if you're looking for free porn, look elsewhere. :P Otherwise, enjoy!
