Well, I'm sitting on my ass, being my usual bored self. I want to do something productive.

Project #1: The Animatrix cover design.

My Animatrix case sucks. It looks like someone drove a pen into it on various places. Since this case is unique, there's no way I'm able replace it. The case is made of a thin cardboard with the design printed right onto it, so I can't use the cover either. If I wanted a shitty case I would've bought it used.

So, I'm going to make my own design for a standard DVD case. I'm not so sure how I'm going to apply it, because I've never done this before. I don't have any high-tech printing machinary, just a printer and photoshop.

I was thinking I could design it, then I could print out the design on normal paper, then carefully glue it to a thin cardboard like a cereal box so it wont rip.

Anyone think that'll work? Any suggestions?
If anyone wants the design after I finish it, just ask.
If this works I might try to make my own artbox...

Yeah, there are plenty of DVD cover design programs out there that you can use. SureThing for instance. You could also go out a buy a couple of full-size DVD cases. They're pretty cheap these days.

On a similar topic, I've been making plenty of my own CD covers lately with SureThing and burning them with my LightScribe DVD burner. The results are actually pretty good, though it is black and white when printed.

Thanks for the program Spaz.

I finished my design. Took a damn 4-6 hours. I had some problems when I was making the back.

I like my design much more then the official one, really. I'm going to print it out tomorrow, but for now, sleepy time.

Awesome I finished it.

I didn't end up gluing it to cardboard. Seems sort of useless.

I cut out the paper with an exacto knife for accuracy. Then I cut out part of the original case and stuck it in the clips on the inside. Overall I am pleased with the result, since it is my first attempt at this and printing in general.

Next I will try my hand at an artbox, once I get more black ink for my printer. Hopefully I will be able to improve the printing quality somehow.

If your printer has ink, that shouldn't happen. When you go to print, open the properties of your printer. You might be able to fix it there.

Nice design. Do you have the original version, for comparison?

Ah thank god someone else on the internet had scanned theirs.

The original case is really weird. They print their design on cardboard then wrap it around a plastic thing that holds the disc. The cardboard they print it on, is incredibly easy to dent.

Here is my design in its original size.

It's a Lightscribe printing, which means it's supposed to be in black and white.

Okay, thanks. I have to take a look at mine, because I bought my copy in Japan.
I think the design is the original, but I might be wrong. I'll be home on Sunday and Monday and check.

The Japanese "Animatrix" cover is the same as in the US, apart from the writings, which are in Japanese.
