As a kid, I used to nick random beans/grains from the supermarket and try planting them.

Beans usually grew well, and I got more beans and could plant more. Though I'd forget to start the next generation usually, and the beans get eaten by birds/insects and stuff so it'd end. Red/black/green beans grew the best, reminded me a lot of my grade school science class lessons on germination and stuff. I tried soy beans and those grew fairly well too.

Corn though is something more sensitive I reckon. I got them to sprout, but they didn't grow and died fairly quick.

And I think that is as much gardening as I ever did.
