Figured that since it was related to music that I would post my question here.

Why are there mosh pits? Why and how did they come about? I went to the DC101 Chili Cook-Off Saturday, and during the various sets, there were scattered circles of mosh pits, where a mess of guys were just... erm, well, beating the crap outta each other and enjoying it? Is a mosh pit just an excuse for guys to burn off excess adrenaline and act tough?

Hehe, I'm not sure how old you are, but this video

20-20 on Heavy Metal (1987?)

might answer your question in part.
Of course I cannot give a profound answer, I'm no specialist in music history, but like this report suggests it has to do with emotions conveyed by the music. Take a look at rave parties - people move frantically in order to "work out" in a sense, the music just drags you along (if you're willing to let it happen). It feels good if you happen to like the music, and, eventually, Heavy Metal is a style that was designed as a scream into the face of the establishment.
Plainly speaking, mosh pits are a way of pushing adrenalin and testosterone in a fun way. Usually such fights are not serious. A good alternative for stage diving I'd say (which is often forbidden or impossible).

i'm the biggest nerd there is, but my music taste mainly comprises of stuff you wouldnt want your local vicar to hear - i personally avoid the moshpits as some people take it way too far - i saw Slayer once, and Lamb of God were playing in support - people were coming out of the pits with broken noses!). just headbanging is fine with me!
