Have any of you seen Satoshi Kon’s new movie, Paprika? I really want to see it but it seems to only be playing on a few screens. What'd you think?

A friend of mine linked me to a trailer for Paprika a few months ago. Knowing nothing about the movie before watching the trailer, I immediately knew just from the style and general craziness of what was occurring on the screen that it was from the same people that created Paranoia Agent, and that's a very good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Sadly, I haven't been able to see it, either. There is a small theater about an hour from my house that has a tendency to show anime (I remember they did a double feature once with Appleseed and Sky Blue), but it seems they aren't going to be playing Paprika. :(

Sucks that it's only a limited release in theaters. I wish that anime was more accepted in the U.S. mainstream so that movie premieres like this aren't limited to a few cities.

I have the sub that I plan to watch later this week. But from what I've seen of it, it looks like it won't do it justice, even if I watch it hooked up to my Yamaha receiver and outputted on my HD set (since it's not an HD version)

Looks like the theater release is spreading out to more major cities across the US rather than just L.A. and N.Y. Sadly, I didn't see it anywhere near me, but some of you guys may be lucky enough to have it near you. It's coming out today, so you should be able to look and see. If you do get to see it, make sure to tell us poor saps that can't see it how it is.

"Satoshi Kon's newest surreal drama feature, Paprika, will expand its American theatrical release this Friday, June 8 after successful runs in the New York and Los Angeles areas. Check local listings for participating theaters in Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, San Jose, Berkeley, Seattle, Minneapolis, and other metropolitan areas. Mongrel Media plans to present the Canadian opening of the film on June 15 in Toronto and Vancouver." ANN News post.

i loved the music! everything about it felt like paranoia agent.
sadly, i did not find the plot very intriguing... the opening song/titles were the best part of the movie.

Kess, just go to Rotten Tomatoes, type in your zip code, and you'll quickly find out if its playing in your area or not.

Ugh, it's not showing in Maryland, Virginia or DC. And I just noticed that my EVERYTHING as far as voice actresses go, Megumi Hayashibara, is the lead VA in the movie. >< Breakin my balls, movie industry...

Maybe if the movie does well enough in this new round of theaters they will continue to expand it out to other areas as well. Well, we can hope anyway...

Well I have watched it and I don't think it deserves all the attention it's getting. "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo" from the same writer is light-years better than this (and is 2006 production as well).

I agree with dbd_addict, this smells "Paranoia Agent" all over, even the soundtrack is similar, and surprise: same writer.

However were the plot fails, I must admit that all the rest excels. Characters are nice (and good looking), animation is great, OST also great. But I will stress this out again, the plot is very vague and the ending is ... well .. "magic" (no real explanation to what happens and how the characters manage to solve their predictment).

I think Paranoia Agent did a better job as a Psichodelic surreal drama, and for movie value, as I mentioned "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo" is way better.
