Synopsis:
Suzuko had always lived as the only
daughter of a kindly Japanese couple. That is, until a gas leak explosion
sends her 500 years back into the past, amidst the Japanese civil war
era. In that time, Suzuko encounters lecherous bandits, helpless peasants,
and piles of dead bodies. Fortunately, Suzuko is rescued by a gruff
but good-hearted warrior. As Suzuko struggles to untangle the time-lines,
she slowly comes to understand the strange force that has exiled her...
and she finally learns the truth about her mysterious past.
Review:
With its highly imaginative and intriguing plot, Fire Tripper is
yet another fine example of Rumiko Takahashi's (of Ranma
1/2 fame) ingenious story-telling. Fire Tripper's
overall feel is Twilight Zone-ish. It takes an ordinary situation and
turns it into something that seems impossible and yet possible at the
same time. The plot draws you in with its strategically placed twists,
and the whole experience is nothing short of amazing. The dialogues
are very witty and funny -- very Rumiko Takahashi. Fire Tripper possesses a good
balance of various elements -- humor, action, adventure, romance...
it's all there. Only the dated-looking visuals can be considered this
title's flaw. Of course, the fact that this anime was released in 1985
is one factor. But then again, Macross was released earlier than Fire Tripper
but Macross' art is considered exceptional even by today's standards.
Nevertheless, Fire Tripper is an excellent anime which I highly recommend.
Miscellanies:
Actually, the manga version is
Fire Tripper's original form. It's part of Ms. Takahashi's Rumic
World Trilogy Vol. 1.
