Synopsis:
Peace has been restored to the land of El Hazard thanks to Makoto
and friends. To top it off, Miz, the Priestess of Water, has finally
gotten her wish -- to marry the flighty high school teacher Mr. Fujisawa!
But when the wedding day arrives, the reluctant groom is nowhere to
be found. All hell breaks loose as Miz realizes she had just been jilted
at the altar! Just as Makoto and the gang go searching for the missing
groom, Jinnai and Deva set off to find a new Bugrom base. But Jinnai
discovers something else -- a weapon of destruction in the form of a
cute girl named Kalia. Kalia agrees to work with Jinnai, or so it seems
at first. Looks like it's up to Makoto and company to save this world
all over again!
Review:
First of all, El Hazard 2 is NOT a continuation of El
Hazard 1. Instead, El Hazard 2 shows us what took place after Ifurita
got transported 10,000 years into the future. The gang is still stuck
in El Hazard. Makoto is trying to locate Ifurita, and at the same time
he is searching for a way back to earth. El Hazard 2 is a filler of
sorts, showing us how life went on after the chaos that ensued in El
Hazard 1.
The plot is fine if you've watched El
Hazard 1. If not, you're bound to end up confused and lost because
El Hazard 2 assumes that you know all these characters already and are
familiar with how they are related and what happened beforehand. Pacing
is okay, and it gets better as the story progresses. The gang's comedic
antics are sure to elicit some laughter too. Although El Hazard2 has
its moments, it doesn't quite measure up to the grandeur of El
Hazard 1. Lesbian themes are more pronounced in El Hazard 2, thanks
to the added presence of Princess Fatora. There are lots of attempted
girl-to-girl action which spells out fan service.
The art and animation are very colorful and nice, but not as great
as El Hazard1's. Characters tend
to look half-baked at certain angles. The English dubbing is done well,
as is the case with all El Hazards. Overall, El Hazard2 isn't bad. It
just falls short of its predecessor. After watching both, one can't
help but compare.
Miscellanies:
Better watch El Hazard 1 first
if you plan on getting El Hazard 2. The DVD boxed set contains all of
El Hazard 1 and El Hazard 2.
