Synopsis:
Urotsukidoji: Perfect Collection is the first half of an infamous pornographic venture by the renowned Toshio Maeda, and has been generating discussion since 1987. It's animation style is a bit dated, but what makes this title so interesting is the scope of its plot, which goes far beyond the usual plunder and rape fare of the day. This is a story about a half-breed demon beast named Amano Jyaku. Amano is searching for the legendary Overfiend, and finds him in an unlikely human: a less-than-average loser Tatsuo.

Review:
What makes this anime so special besides the variety of squelching noises and hot pink bodily fluids? How many hentai titles have you seen which incorporate World War II and Adolf Hitler into their storylines? Granted, the flashbacks to the 1940's are some of the most enjoyable parts Urotsukidoji (or would be if the producers of the DVD had not allowed the English subtitles to be placed directly on top of the Japanese subtitles for the German dialogue which made a big ugly mess.). There's consensual sex -- and that, for hentai, is a very big deal! Not only consensual sex, but consensual human and demon sex, and I can assure you that isn't something you'll come across too often.

For all its encompassing plot and sense of grandeur, Urotsukidoji never takes itself too seriously. Amano's sister Megumi is the bringer of much-needed comic relief, and is also a very sexually liberated girl -- a nice change from the common "slut stereotype" in porn. What I like most is the lack of good guy / bad guy roles. Amano is not a really likeable guy, he watched Akemi's rape with a detached air of indifference, and even tried to stop Tatsuo from saving her. He's got his own agenda and won't let anything delay it. You can't fault Takeaki for what he does either, he's gone through an enormous trauma and takes his helplessness out on everyone.

Urotsukidoji touches on some very heavy issues, not limited to rape and child abuse. Akemi, Niki, and Takeaki are all very tragic characters. If you watch the entire series, you will notice a giant drop in the plot and a larger emphasis on tentacle sex. Avoid the dubbed version at all costs or your ears will hate you. Despite its claim of being an unedited, uncut, and uncensored hentai film, you will find that you were lied to! Genitals and penetration are depicted, but under a fog -- even more so in the later episodes. Sex scenes tend to get recycled and flipped over a bit too. The animation itself starts off pretty rough but improves a lot by the end of the series. Urotsukidoji's got an epic feel to it, and the soundtrack is pretty decent too.

Miscellanies:
Urotsukidoji: Perfect Collection contains the first two halves of the original OAV. In an infuriating marketing strategy, Central Park Media never released the second half of the series... they went and put out Urotsukidoji Saga: Hell on Earth. Hell on Earth is made up of the rest of the series, but also the first half as well. If you already own Perfect Collection, you have to buy the entire OAV over again -- with a significant price jump. Very annoying. The DVD's only worthwhile features are the parental control lock and the creator's biography. Scene selection is pretty limited.

If you like Urotsukidoji, you might want to try Maeda's other works such as "Adventure Kid", "Demon Beast Invasion", and "La Blue Girl."
