Review:
Suguru is a man to be admired. Not only did he conveniently lie to his girlfriend about getting into the same college as her, but he did so as a way to take her virginity before promptly spilling the beans… a truer testament to man I have yet to see. His virginity stealing trickery doesn’t exactly put him in her good graces however, and Suguru quickly finds himself not only without a future but without a girlfriend to boot. Beaten down by life and a group of thugs, he’s truly hit rock bottom as he contemplates his existence in a pile of trash. But you have to fall before you can rise, and Suguru is about to learn just that as he suddenly meets all sorts of women who want nothing more than a piece of his apparently oh so delicious body.

His first encounter comes in said pile of trash, where a middle aged woman finds his dilapidated self and brings him to her apartment to “clean him up.” Of course, she can’t let this supple young treat just slip through her experienced fingers, and as he showers off she offers her help, to relieve those rather stiff spots that crop up every now and again. This is all well and good until the morning comes and he has to escape off the balcony when her husband shows up. Ah, and things were going so well, but fear not Suguru, fate has a destiny for you and it includes an endless line of women who want you for reasons unknown to us mere mortals.

As the OVA progresses and Suguru keeps striking it rich with the girls he runs into, he finally happens upon what he’s been looking for. A strip club, but not just any old strip club, his Uncle owns the building and has decided to offer him a room there while he studies for next year’s entrance exams. This may not be the best place for the ever excitable Suguru, especially when he find that he and a girl he previously helped are now living in the same room. I’m sure you can imagine the situations that come up thereafter, including the always beloved naked apron, accidental peeping, jealous strippers wanting their fair shot and just an all around good time for our dear lead that lost it all only to gain more than he could have ever hoped for. At least, that’s the case until he suddenly finds himself with a girlfriend who, as a way to keep him focused, decides to withhold sex until he passes his entrance exams. Now that’s what you call sweet, sweet justice.

It’s little things like that, the strange and amusing situations that Suguru gets himself into, that make The Roommate enjoyable to watch. Of course, him going about town and having sex with just about every woman he meets doesn’t hurt either, but the scenes needed to have a little more spice in their diet, instead of the same things happening over and over again. As it stands they may be fully explicit, but they just aren’t doing anything to really draw you in. Other than the always enticing naked apron-- there’s little they can do to screw that one up.

Aside from the tamer than desired sex scenes, my main complaint would have to fall on the less than stellar animation that gets the job done but really doesn’t do it with any style points. The lack of quality there also shows up in the character designs, which fluctuate between looking alright to looking not so good. It’s sad when a title can’t even keep the characters attractive, but I suppose budget constraints get in the way of our full enjoyment once again. At least the Japanese language track is well done, but yet again we are without an English dub to test out our sanity with.

I have to say I did enjoy The Roommate, thanks to its fun and corky nature; it just had neither the technical quality nor sexual variety necessary to rise above the fray. It’s certainly worth checking out if you like the premise though; you should get a good time out of it. I just don’t think you’ll be coming back for seconds.
