Synopsis: Foster is a man who trains young ladies into becoming submissive sex slaves... all under the guise of working as housemaids. His boss is Dread Burton, a wealthy and powerful railroad tycoon. Dread uses the girls to further his business relations with other prominent men. But why is his own daughter Cleya peddling herself alongside the other sex slaves?
Review: The Maiden Diaries is a single DVD compilation of four VHS volumes that had been released a few years ago: Maiden of Desire, Maiden of Decadence, Maiden of Deception, and Maiden of Destruction. The Maiden Diaries is about a group of housemaids in a posh mansion. They do household chores and serve as Dread Burton's sex slaves, pleasuring and servicing whoever he brings to the house. Each episode focuses on a particular girl. How she comes to work at the mansion is vaguely explained and most of the screening time is dedicated to her sexual training and her sessions with Dread Burton's guests. It's weird because at some point each girl develops some level of affection for their trainer Foster.
The Maiden Diaries is a confusing series. Not because of the story, which is quite straightforward -- it's the characters that complicate things. For starters I couldn't really tell if Foster was a good guy or bad guy. At times he'd seem to feel sorry for some of the girls, yet more often he'd be extremely detached from everything that was happening. One girl was given the option to leave because her debt had already been paid up by the services she had rendered, but she chose to stay behind and continue her life as a sex slave instead. Another girl willingly submitted herself to training and servitude because she's obsessed with Foster. Meanwhile, Cleya, Dread's daughter, believes that she deserves the depraved way her father is treating her.
The art and animation are somewhat above average. Character designs are satisfactory and sex scenes are depicted in detail. A wide variety of fetishes are explored (clothespins anyone?), with the most emphasis given to bondage. The English dubbing is okay, at least I could understand what everyone was saying and nobody came across as annoying.
Overall, The Maiden Diaries is a run-of-the-mill hentai title which didn't really do much for me. I must admit that the sex scenes were rather provocative, albeit I felt a tinge of pity for the girls as I watched them service numerous guests. It's not bad, but it's not something I'd rave about either.
Miscellanies: The Maiden Diaries is made up of four half-hour episodes. The series used to be sold as a four-volume VHS set.
