Review:
Brandishing aspects of the epic Journey to the West novel, The Karma Saiyuki follows a trio of female vixens as they traverse the desert with their short, bald, and all around perverted leader Tsutomu. They’d sent Mayu off to go score them some meat buns, a feat she can quickly accomplish thanks to her flying cloud (flying nimbus anyone?), but their lack of food is starting to get the better of them. Stuck out in the middle of the desert with no food is starting to drive them all crazy, but Usagi has a plan. Eat the horse. That and a fork plunging into his back is all the horse needs as he practically flies to the next town in order to save his own hide. Arriving in the next town before Mayu is able to catch up, they decide to feed their starving selves, sparing the poor horse this time around, but Tsutomu has other desires he needs satisfied. Noticing a brothel off to the side with a delectable young thing working there, he decides they should all have a little fun while waiting for Mayu to return. Even the women aren’t opposed to the idea, which is just how I like it. They may have bitten off more than they can chew this time though, for if Mayu doesn’t find them in time, these sexbots may just sex them all to death!   Let’s just hope she doesn’t break up the party too quickly though.

The Karma Saiyuki is an odd conglomeration of various elements all thrown into a single episode that effectively takes us nowhere. We start out with the main characters being introduced in what seems to be a present day café and eatery, but then magically, without any segue or indication why, it transports us back in time and slightly changes all their designs. Now I can’t complain about the design changes, they all do look better as a result and come off as quite attractive female specimens, I just don’t understand how it all came about. Then there’s the fact that we enter at some random point in their journey, giving us a story that has no larger implications that those held within its boundaries. If this were a series it would be one of those stand-alone, filler-esque episodes with really no reason for being other than giving our cast another problem to solve. Luckily the fact that the story neither goes anywhere nor has any real point doesn’t detract much from what is arguably an excellent hentai title.

Now surely the OVA would have been even better if they had made it into a multi-episode series, giving us a taste of their journey from beginning to end, but sadly that isn’t the case. I say sadly not only because it would have, conceivably, made The Karma Saiyuki even better, but because the one episode we do get is wonderful. It’s filled with perverted antics, over-the-top comedy, actual action scenes and some great sex with all sorts of tentacle, yuri and futa (dickgirl) play. Over the thirty five minute runtime I never felt like the episode was dragging its heels or spending too much time on one thing or another. The Karma Saiyuki really executes with precision, even the animation is top notch. This, along with the quality designs and explicit details make the sex scenes a joy to watch, especially when the women are going at it with one another. Just make sure to read quickly since it’s only in Japanese, as is often the case with newer releases lately.

There may be absolutely no point to The Karma Saiyuki, but that hardly stops it from being one hell of a blast. The sex is diverse, exciting and almost nonstop, the action scenes are competently done and don’t fall into the trap of overstaying their welcome, while the comedy of it all shines through. It’s here to please, and it succeeds in spades.

Miscellaneous:
For anyone who has enjoyed either Dragonballz or Saiyuki, The Karma Saiyuki should be a great bit of nostalgia for you. Between the tiny golden monkey, power pole, meat buns and flying nimbus, there are connections aplenty.
