Slight Fever Syndrome
Reviewer: Rowena Lim Lei 11/15/2001

Synopsis:
Yuzuhira Mizuki, or simply Ms. Mizuki to students and colleagues, is the new counselor / nurse on campus. She's warm, approachable, and very understanding... so much so that even the faculty members go to her for advice! But what starts out as a regular job turns into something else when a student asks Ms. Mizuki to teach her how to masturbate. Soon, Ms. Mizuki becomes the unofficial sexual consultant in school... and she's still a virgin herself! To top it all off, she finds herself very much attracted to one of the male students...

Review:
I pretty much decided not to buy Slight Fever Syndrome when I saw the trailer in one of my other videos. The artwork didn't look too enticing, and the description posted on various online shops didn't really spark any interest. Fortunately, one of my friends decided to try out the first VHS volume and subsequently passed it on to me.

Rather cute and comical, Slight Fever Syndrome is about a nice lady named Yuzuhira Mizuki. She had just started working as a counselor / nurse in the school's infirmary. But aside from administering first aid and helping students with their problems, Ms. Mizuki also ends up providing sexual guidance as well!

Slight Fever Syndrome is character-driven rather than plot-based for most part. Many different situations pop up in the course of Ms. Mizuki's counselling career, and Slight Fever Syndrome is all about how she handles them. The main dilemma of this series is, however, the blossoming romance between Ms. Mizuki and Kirishima -- one of the male students. I was quite impressed by Ms. Mizuki's characterization. She remains a "good" girl despite the nature of her counseling sessions, and she develops into someone that you can actually care about. I for one found myself a bit concerned about what the series has in store for her.

The art and animation aren't very good. The overall look is unpolished, and the character designs take some getting used to. The female characters look like they overdid the eyeliner and mascara, but the males look like your average anime guys. The depiction of sex is pretty graphic. The female genital area is illustrated strangely, and would make it seem like there's this big gaping hole down there. It looks very bizarre, plus it's impossible not to notice because it just grabs your attention. Slight Fever Syndrome is mildly entertaining and amusing... but what I've seen isn't enough to convince me to shell out $20+ for the next installment. I'd probably rent it if it's available though, if just to find out what happens to Ms. Mizuki and Kirishima in the end.

Miscellanies:
This review covers only the first episode.

The good news is, the DVD release contains all the episodes for the same price as the individual VHS volumes.
