Sex Craft

Synopsis:
Three girls are about to learn it’s a bad thing to offend a spirit. Using a witchboard, or wigi board if you will, to contact the other side, an off comment by one girl enrages the spirit they’ve summoned into a vengeful fury. Taking over their bodies one by one and making them have sex with strange men and women. These three girls have certainly put themselves in quite the pickle. Then, a sexually frustrated young man who has lost his girlfriend transforms his anger and sadness into lustful raping spiritual energy. Manifesting into a semi-physical form and “pillaging” any girls unlucky enough to stay at school after dark. Will Mia Tsunoda and the other members of the Paranormal Club be able to help these poor lost souls who dared to cross into the realm of the supernatural?

Review:
Sex Craft, as the case proudly proclaims, is from the creators of Bible Black, and it shows. With a focus on high school girls and their encounters with, and dabbling in, the supernatural powers of the occult, it almost sounds like the exact same thing all over again. This time around though, it’s not as dark, the sex is toned down, and the storyline is focused more on trying to be a detective story, full of spiritually charged sex and mystery. Which sounds much better on paper than it does in practice, at least where Sex Craft is concerned.

Each episode focuses on a different problem that Mia Tsunoda, the leader of the Paranormal Club, has to solve using her paranormal knowledge, coupled with the fact that she is a medium. Whether it’s three girls getting possessed by a malicious, sex craved spirit or a young man’s projected self raping students, all the solutions somehow involve sex. This, again, sounds much more interesting than it actually ends up. It’s obvious the creators were expecting the series to run much longer than 2 episodes, especially with the “To Be Continued” at the end of the second episode. It just never feels like it was able to get into full stride. Mia is the main character for all intents and purposes, but it doesn’t feel that way. In fact, it doesn’t really feel like the series has a main character in the typical sense, it feels like the stories presented in each episode are supposed to take center stage. Now this may be because Mia is always an outside character that is brought into the situation by other students, or because those other students really take the reins in each respective episode, but, regardless, there is one big problem here. These stories are too short and the characters too underdeveloped for the series to rest its success on their shoulders. And without a firm lead, it makes all the random sex with one-off characters feel empty and dull.

The first thing I noticed about Sex Craft is that it looks very similar to Bible Black, at least in terms of character designs. The only problem here is that the girls are not as attractive and Mia, the only one I would say looks unique, in sparely in the scenes that matter. Then there is the animation, which is a bit worse this time around. There are just one too many pans and loops for my taste, and one of the action sequences really doesn’t look very good. That’s nothing compared to the English dub, with a cast that makes these high school girls sound like they’re 30 years old, aside from the general lack of quality one comes to expect from a hentai title’s dub. Which is to say, just watch it subbed.

One thing I was really surprised by was how tame all the sex scenes were, and how boring it all seemed. Half the time the sex scenes are with characters you don’t even know, the other half of the time it’s with characters that you have no connection with. This means that one’s enjoyment of the sex scenes depends solely on how well done they are, and therein lies the problem. The sex scenes are little more than average and hardly feature anything outside the usual one-on-one play, making almost every scene limp. There is one group scene at the end of the first episode that is actually pretty good, but that’s about it for scenes that make any sort of impression.

Sex Craft feels a lot like a botched Bible Black clone, with numerous copied themes mixed with a couple new ideas that just don’t work that well. It’s not that the OAV is terrible, it won’t pain you to watch it or make you wish you hadn’t, it just succeeds at nothing more than being another average hentai title. Things might have turned out better if the series hadn’t been stopped midstream, but the world may never know.
