Review:
Aside from his dream girl staying ever elusive, Narita is quite happy spending his days as a normal student at Enoshime College. His carefree days of spying on the girls locker room and lifting up skirts are about to come to an end however, as missing students and unimaginable murders are starting to occur with alarming frequency. It's just lucky for Narita that his constant female companion and supposed childhood friend Iijima is actually a warrior from the future.  She's followed the evil replinoids, tentacle laden monsters with a love for female blood, to the past were they hope to wreak havoc on a much weaker human race. They didn't count on Iijima coming back to try and stop their nefarious plans, nor did they ever imagine an ordinary college student would end up being the legendary champion who could wield the Hero sword. It's like some sort of bizarre fairytale!

With a mix of comedy, action and plenty of disturbing tentacle scenes, Fobia is giving us everything we could want and more. Tentacle space aliens? Sure. Time travel? Why not! Transformation sequences? All the better! It's like they tried to make one huge parody of late 80's and early 90's hentai titles like La Blue Girl and Urotsukidoji with a few jabs at magical girl anime for good measure. Now that's all well and good, everyone can enjoy a good parody, but it doesn't actually feel like that's what Fobia was going for. More likely than not, they simply threw everything but the kitchen sink into this thing to try to make it work. And other than some unintentional laughs, it really didn't achieve its lofty goals. That may explain why only two episodes were ever completed, as a cliffhanger at the end of the second alludes to a never made third episode.

Fobia's biggest crime isn't the failure of its storyline however, that's par for the hentai course. What you don't expect to find is a veritable dearth of sexual content. Oh there's tentacle rape aplenty to be sure, but there isn't one consensual, non-tentacle filled sex scene in the entire thing. With a runtime over eighty minutes, you would have thought they could have given us something. It's not just the lack of anything other than tentacle rape that's the problem, but that nothing below the belt is actually shown. Those tentacles may be defiling women like champions, but we never really see what's going on as they keep all the naughty bits thoroughly hidden from view. The animation and technical quality overall aren’t helping matters, as the visual quality is largely suspect, even for a mid-90’s hentai title. That same lack of finish extends to the character designs as well, but at least they got Iijima right with a wonderful combo of red hair and green eyes that is used far too little.

Between tentacle scenes that are more a tease than anything else and a mishmash of story elements that smell of desperation, Fobia doesn't have enough going for it to sufficiently counteract all the negatives. It's still a somewhat fun and quirky hentai title to watch, but that's about all it has going for it.

Miscellaneous:
Iijima may constantly berate Narita for his perverseness, but I think, deep down, she loves it when he gets horny from peeking at her breasts and panties. This is also why it’s a shame they didn’t have a sex scene between the two of them.

Surprisingly enough, the English dub is actually fairly enjoyable. The playful banter and Iijima's alluring voice made for a passable contender to the Japanese language track.
