Dragon Knight 2: Gaiden
Reviewer: Rowena Lim Lei 12/22/2001

Synopsis:
Our horny hero Takeru is back! Almost everybody has come to know how he saved the kingdom of Strawberry Fields, and his fame is not unsung. Passing through a town, he meets a young boy named Jody who's looking for his missing sister. After being assured that Jody's sister is a beautiful girl, Takeru agrees to help him find her. But what starts out as a simple quest to track down a missing person turns out to be something darker and more sinister...

Review:
After being subjected to the mediocre piece of work that was "Dragon Knight", I didn't have high expectations for the sequel -- Dragon Knight 2. The longstanding fact that most sequels are worse than the originals didn't help either. Except for some brief references to Takeru's heroic act of saving Strawberry Fields, Dragon Knight 2's plot is totally unrelated to the first installment. I was pleasantly surprised by the improved story structure and characterization employed in Dragon Knight 2. Takeru stumbles into a town that's slowly being consumed by evil, and he has to get to the bottom of things before it's too late. There's much more to it than just going to a dungeon, slashing monsters, and rescuing pretty ladies.

Dragon Knight 2 is not without its down side though. Some of the dialogues imply certain things that are left unexplained, and the ending leaves you with the impression that there's supposed to be more coming. Takeru has matured some, and he's no longer the shutter-clicking pervert that he was in Dragon Knight. He's actually a gentleman of sorts in Dragon Knight 2, making him a more likeable hero. Supporting characters are also portrayed with more depth this time -- each given their own distinct personalities and purposes. The art and animation are below average, and generally screams low budget. I'm not happy with the untidy and unrefined style with which most of the characters are drawn, and none of the girls are pretty! The action scenes have improved a bit over Dragon Knight, the poor artwork makes it hard to appreciate.

Although there is actual sexual intercourse in Dragon Knight 2, it's not portrayed too explicitly. The most you'll see are boobs and butts -- the lower genitalia are not really shown. Dragon Knight 2 is better than Dragon Knight in terms of plot and characterization, but it loses whatever flashes of humor Dragon Knight had. The visual quality goes down to boot. Summing it all up, Dragon Knight 2 is still pretty much average fare -- like Dragon Knight was.

Miscellanies:
The bishoujo RPG Dragon Knight III was released as "Knights of Xentar" in the US, but it's out-of-print now.
