Synopsis:
Mai Sakakibara is heartbroken when her fiancé Ryouji dies in an accident. Now Ryouji had been involved in some genetics-related research. He told Mai that it was highly possible to have someone's baby simply by gathering DNA material such as saliva from a cigarette. Mai is inspired when she sees some of Ryouji's leftover cigarettes, and decides to try and have Ryouji's baby through genetic engineering. The problem is, Mai can't afford the procedure. Thus the company decides to recruit Mai as a DNA Hunter in order to help her earn the money she needs. A DNA Hunter is paid to collect DNA material (i.e. sperm) from a target that a client requests. The targets are usually highly capable, exceptionally skilled, and prominent men and female clients would use their sperm in order to have babies on their own. Mai agrees to be a DNA Hunter... and she is promptly sent off to her first mission...

Review:
A lot of aspects of DNA Hunter reminded me of Charlie's Angels. Aside from the fact that all the DNA Hunters are lovely young ladies, they get their orders from an anonymous boss who only lets his voice be heard. The boss even has a liaison guy called Mr. Soda who takes care of the details regarding the DNA Hunters' missions.

The DNA Hunters are comprised of Mai, Shiori, Kathleen, and Masumi. But since this is mainly Mai's story, all of the episodes more or less showcase Mai's missions. Mai has a hard time adjusting to her new career at first, but after her successful "trial" mission, she gets pretty comfortable with the whole deal.

I was quite impressed with DNA Hunter right after I watched it, but the more I thought about the whole scenario, the less I thought of it. After all, aren't the DNA Hunters just glorified prostitutes? What's more, if Mai does have a baby by Ryouji in the future, what would she tell it? "Mom had to sleep around with like half the city in order to have you?" Maybe I'm reading too much into the story... but DNA Hunter just leaves too many loose ends with its nonchalant ending.

The art and animation came off as above average upon first glance, but as I was doing screencaps I noticed the inconsistent rendition quality and stiff movements in several places, along with the disproportionate mouths and penises during some of the oral sex scenes. Like in episode three when Mai was sucking on her target's penis, it looked as if she had no mouth at all. In that same episode, Mai is gang-raped and one of the rapists forces Mai to suck on his gigantic member. It looked horrible, because his penis was just way too big and it looked like he was shoving the thick end of a baseball bat into her small mouth. The English dubbing was generally okay, porn stars Kylie Ireland and Misty Rain did Mai and Kathleen's voices -- just can't remember who did who. Whoever did Mai's voice did a nice job, but I found Kathleen to be a tad too stiff although she did have the right kind of voice for the part. Everyone else was pretty much okay.

DNA Hunter is actually above average hentai fare. You'll enjoy it a lot more if you don't read too much into it like I did. Let's just say the less you ponder on it, the better it is.

Miscellanies:
DNA Hunter is made up of three episodes. It's practically begging for a sequel.
