Many years ago Keiko’s professor and mentor, Dr. Haruhiko Yamagishi, was expelled from academia after he tried to create a human clone. While this may have hampered his research momentarily, it never stopped his desire reignite the same hyper level of human evolution that happened during the Cambrian period some 10,000 years ago. Now, as his research nears completion, he’s going to use his former student and love interest Keiko as his final test subject in his perverse experiments that not only mutate you when sexually aroused, but extenuate all your base desires to the extreme. With Keiko caught in the middle, she’s about to find out why you don’t go see a psychotic genius who’s living in a secluded warehouse with no one around for miles…
That’s a lesson Keiko has to learn firsthand however, as she quickly finds herself being ravaged by an already evolved Dr. Haruhiko and his newfound horde of tentacle extremities. If that wasn’t bad enough though, once you have sex with an evolved human you’re now one of them. Keiko doesn’t find that out until later however, when her boyfriend Hirotaka comes over for a little fun. That’s when everything pretty much goes to pot, as multiple people start getting infected and turned into crazy looking monsters that love to have sex and whatever else their inner desires tells them. Hirotaka, for example, has his anger and aggression amped up, which he chooses to unleash on his co-worker Hideaki since he always had his eye on Keiko too. It’s just a mess as crazy monsters start raping and killing as they lose control of their former selves and Dr. Haruhiko just waits off to the side as his grand scheme quickly takes root.
While the plot may not have any meaningful conclusion, as it was probably originally planned on being longer than two episodes, the real problem with Cambrian has to do with all these freaky evolved humans getting it on after they transform. For example, Dr. Haruhiko starts out just being a hugely beefy, and purple, tentacle monster that’s not too outside the monster norm, until he eventually becomes some sort of huge snail looking thing. I mean, talk about taking the sex appeal right out of it. Not even the more traditional hentai scenes give us much of a break, as they have largely nothing interesting to offer other than the traditional coupling we all expect from every hentai title. In either case there’s an odd lack of sexual perversity as lower regions are typically covered or hidden in one way or another. With decent animation and a fairly high level of detail I’m not quite sure why that was, but when I spent twenty seconds staring at a guy’s thigh while they hid the juicy bits I began to question where their priorities were. There’s also no English dub this time around, as happens with many JapanAnime titles, but the Japanese voices are quite good. It’s the sub translation quality that’s a bit lacking, but it’s not egregious.
With an unfinished story and some decidedly disturbing sex scenes, Cambrian certainly isn’t bringing its A game. Its general shortcomings aside, there is enough substance to make it worth checking out, just don’t expect anything impressive.
