Black Widow is yet another “bondage mansion” type hentai where sexual acts occur in evil lairs of restrictive pleasure involving all sorts of rope and leather wear. This time around a group three males and four females are on a trip to the mountains, but they’ve run into a problem. They’re lost in the woods with their compass apparently leading them astray as night falls and the first sprinklings of rain dash their hopes of making it back. Stumbling upon a manor in the middle of the woods, they decide to let themselves in for the night and try to find someone in the house to let them know of their plight and ask for help. However, what they’ve happened upon is not their salvation but their own destruction.
In an attempt to find someone in the home they decide to break into groups, to let whomever may be living there know that they are just trying to get out of the rain after being lost and not for some ulterior motive. Even though they’ve found signs that someone’s been there only moments before they arrived, including a pot of boiling water and a lit cigarette, they’re unable to detect a living soul. Finding someone quickly becomes the least of their problems as things quickly spiral out of control. People start disappearing, getting knocked unconscious, and tied up all over the place. There’s a mysterious woman who calls herself Maya that’s causing all the trouble but no one can seem to find her, let alone stop her. Her first targets are Naoya and Jun, two of the guys who initially split off and made their way to the kitchen, but they suddenly find themselves in a strange white room where she teases and has a little fun with them before getting down to business. While this is going on Seiya gets knocked out and Sayaka gets tied up and violated by a huge worm thing. Things just deteriorate from there as Saki gets taken outside and raped by two leather clad masked men and Yukari gets hung from the ceiling while they do her from both sides in a dungeon room filled with candles. Only Akira, the last male standing, is saved from having something happen to him as he moves from one area to the next watching all these girls getting raped and violated while he’s helpless to stop it. About halfway through the second and final episode is when everything’s finally laid bare and we get a clearer picture of just why they’re locked in the mansion and why some crazy woman is after them. While it does make sense, with their true inner feelings and attitudes being the crux of their misfortune, it doesn’t save the title from being too depressing and intolerable for its own good.
When they first enter the mansion I can see why they may split up to try and find out if someone is there. They’ve no reason to suspect anything is amiss other than them being strangely lost even though they were going the right direction. However, when they start to see signs of inhabitants living there even though they can’t find anyone, and when Akira finds a foot long worm making its way into a tied up Sayaka, it’s time to rearrange your priorities. After that they should have never split up into groups again, found or attempted to find the rest of their party and then kept everyone together while they tried to bust out of the now locked mansion. But no, Akira just keeps running anywhere and everywhere like a headless chicken while everyone around him keeps disappearing after he leaves them behind. Not only that, but their attempts at escape border on, well, they don’t actually try to escape at all. They just cry about their being locked in but do effectively nothing to try and break out. At the very least they could have had them try and fail, that would have made some semblance of sense. I mean, one scene has Akira watching Seiya getting raped through the crack in a door left by one of those chain locks. He just stands there screaming for a certain someone to stop when he could easily break that lock with a couple door rams/kicks and stop the guy himself. I can only stand so much stupidity before it becomes overwhelming and it’s situations like that when you just have to ask yourself what the hell they’re doing.
When you’re not gawking at the stupidity of the characters, which probably won’t be too often, you’ll be treated to the less than stellar animation and detail work. The animation just feels stiff and rigged much of the time, choosing to keep things immovable as a way to keep animation down. Then there’re the details which are just all over the place, especially with regards to the characters and their often misshapen limbs and poorly drawn features. Even the sex scenes aren’t spared from the same problems as the rest of it, but their unique nature is able to pull them through in spite of their lacking technicals. Now, if you really want to torture yourself, or possibly laugh your way through the whole sordid thing, give the English dub a whirl. Not only does it sound terrible, but they did it in some sort of jock-speak combined with bad porn jokes that gives the title a completely different feel than the Japanese track.
If only the characters hadn’t been such numskulls Black Widow would have ended up higher on the enjoyment factor, but at least it’s other aspects aren’t so taxing. The story is, if nothing else, intriguing as you try to make sense of what the hell’s going on and why it’s happening. Even the sex, while nothing amazing, serves its purpose and offers up some appealing bondage situations. (And I have to say the characters are pretty good looking when they aren’t skimping on the details.) So if you think you can take the characters constantly acting like brainless zombies, and if you like a little bondage play, I can’t say that Black Widow will treat you badly.
