Sailor Moon S Movie: Hearts in Ice
Reviewer: Rowena Lim Lei 12/31/1999

Synopsis:
Luna has always wondered what it's like to be in love. She finds out the day she falls ill and almost gets hit by a car. Kakeru, a brilliant young scientist, saves her from certain death and nurses her back to health. Luna and Kakeru become friends and Luna gradually falls for her hero. The problem is, Kakeru seems to be the target of Snow Queen Kaguya, an icy new nemesis from deep space. Luna must enlist the help of the sailor soldiers to save her love from certain doom. But what does the enemy want from Kakeru? And what about Himeko, Kakeru's long-time sweetheart? Can a cat and a human fall in love?

Review:
Sailormoon S the Movie is not really about Sailormoon or any of the sailor soldiers. As the synopsis suggests, the story is focused on Luna and her first love. All the sailor soldiers except for Sailorsaturn and the Starlights are in this movie, and you get to see each one kick the enemies' butts in their own cool ways.

The Luna and Kakeru plotline is a pretty unique twist. It's just too bad they always have to have a villain who wants to take over the world, something which is really tired and over-used. I felt that they could have pushed this movie further if they had deviated from the day-to-day fight with evil routine. We get enough of that from the TV series, and I do mean all 200 episodes. There are some romantic scenes for Usagi-Mamoru fans, great fighting action, as well as some backgrounders on the sailor soldiers in the form of a nice, lengthy intro sequence. We get a good look at what the girls are like when they're just hanging out and having fun.

The art and animation are superbly done, as is always the case with Sailormoon movies. Despite its predictability, the Sailormoon S Movie is definitely a treat for Sailormoon fans, but non-fans won't have a difficult time following it either. Here's your chance to see nine sailors working together in one movie.

Miscellanies:
Luna could've been given a nicer dress and hairdo during her brief stint as a human.
