Kimagure Orange Road Summer's Beginning
Reviewer: Rowena Lim Lei 06/20/2000

Kyosuke and Madoka are together at last. But things get a little shaky when Kyosuke becomes the victim of a traffic accident. The accident somehow fast forwards Kyosuke three years into the future where things don't look so good for him and Madoka. To complicate things further, Hikaru enters his life again. But this time, Hikaru is all grown up... will Kyosuke have to choose whom he loves once more?
New Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning answers the question of what happened after Kyosuke chooses Madoka. In order to appreciate this fully, one must have watched the original OAVs.
An accident causes Kyosuke's psychic abilities to go haywire, which distorts the timelines, therefore distorting his life. The pacing is much better compared the original Kimagure Orange Road. There are sexual situations but they are handled tactfully and nothing really explicit is shown. Hikaru improves a lot, both physically and personality-wise. Having accomplished much on her own, she is now more mature and a bit sophisticated.
The art and animation have been updated. Gone is the dated look of the old Kimagure Orange Road. I prefer the way everyone looks now. The English dubbing doesn't work for me. Kyosuke's voice and manner of speaking are annoying. The other characters are more tolerable but I feel they really could've done a better job.
Summer's Beginning ties up the whole Kimagure Orange Road series neatly. It even gives us a glimpse of how things are a few years into the future. This is an excellent, non-frustrating epilogue to the classic love triangle.
I watched this with some people who had no Kimagure Orange Road background, and they liked what they saw.
